Carrier Launches HFO R-1234ze Chillers for Industrial Process Applications

PUREtec™ refrigerant, a new line of high-performance, compact process cooling chillers with ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant R-1234ze. The new chiller line is optimised for industrial processing such as food manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, plastics, metal industries and applications requiring ultra-reliable cooling up to -12degC. Carrier is part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), the leading global provider of healthy, safe, sustainable and intelligent building and cold chain solutions. Carrier’s AquaForce Vision 30KAV air-cooled, variable-speed screw chillers are designed to minimise energy consumption and impact on the environment while maximising performance and ease of installation and maintenance. Energy efficient solutions like the AquaForce 30KAV chiller support Carrier’s 2030 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Goals to reduce its customers’ carbon footprint by more than 1 gigaton. The chiller is available in four sizes, spanning capacities from 280 kW to 800 kW into -4degC/-8degC
medium temperature process cooling and from 530 kW to 1300 kW into 12/7degC high-temperature process cooling or comfort cooling. The unit’s carbon footprint is minimised due to its combination of ultra-low GWP HFO refrigerant, a 40% reduction in refrigerant charge due to use of Novation® micro-channel heat exchangers and outstanding energy efficiency delivered by the onboard variable speed drive, which precisely matches compressor speed to load. The chiller’s compact design, with a physical footprint one-third less than standard 30KAV chillers, enables it to be deployed where space is tight without compromising performance. “The new chiller has been designed and optimised for use in a wide range of process cooling applications,”
said William Doll, Europe Marketing Manager, Chillers and Heat Exchangers, Carrier. “It delivers high seasonal energy efficiency, a low environmental footprint, excellent reliability, safe operation and a very low total cost of ownership over its lifetime.” For mission critical applications, such as process cooling and food manufacturing, Carrier has developed an ultra-fast capacity recovery option. In the event of the chiller power supply being interrupted, the recovery option enables immediate chiller restart following power restoration with 100% capacity recovery within one minute, minimising the risk of damage to the process or products being cooled. All 30KAV models can also be equipped with
an innovative boosted total heat recovery option that allows more heat to be recovered during the winter, further increasing efficiency and reducing running costs. The heat recovery option uses a hybrid design that harnesses the benefits of both serial and parallel design approaches. When heat reclaim is activated, the air-cooled coils are automatically isolated to reduce the impact of cold ambient air on the heat capacity that can be recovered from the water-cooled heat exchanger.

Condair helps harrier’s print run smoothly
arrier Group, a leading UK digital printing firm, has invested in four Condair RS restive steam humidifiers to maintain the perfect production environment in its newly-designed, high-tech print room. The Condair RS humidifiers were specified by the contractor, Brothwell Irvine,
who were commissioned to develop a new state-of-the-art inkjet print room at Harrier’s Newton Abbot site in Devon. Accurate humidity control maintains the integrity of the paper being used. If the atmosphere is too dry, paper can develop tight edges and curl at the corners, whilst too much moisture in the air can cause paper to become wavy as it absorbs water. Any dimensional change can result in print issues, as the machines run at such high speed. This is especially critical as the inkjet printer at Harrier’s Newton Abbot site is running at high volumes 24-hours a day. Harrier’s Health, Safety and Facilities Manager, Jeremy Rawley, says the units installed in the new room
are maintaining the vital humidity levels required of between 40% and 60%. He also points out that speed of delivery and local after-sales service were key factors in choosing Condair, which he describes as a world leader in that type of equipment. He says: “We already knew the company, as we have a couple of their units in other print rooms. The
quality of their equipment is right up there. Paper is susceptible to changes in environmental conditions so humidity is really important. Their service is second to none as well. We work to tough deadlines and one of the key things for us is that Condair could supply the equipment quickly within the required timescale. Having a local service engineer on call to maintain them in tip-top condition is important for us too.” Paper is a hygroscopic material that adapts to reach a condition of equilibrium with the humidity conditions of the surrounding environment. Any changes in the paper‘s internal moisture content will cause dimensional variations and a loss of flatness. The Condair RS humidifiers monitor the room’s humidity level and provide steam directly to the atmosphere whenever needed. Each humidifier installed at Harrier is capable of delivering up to 8kg/h of steam from its integrated fan unit. Having multiple units installed in the large print room ensures very accurate humidity control, consistently across the complete area. When scale forms on the heating elements, as it will do in any steam humidifier, it breaks off and falls into a scale collector tank located at the bottom of the unit. he University of Warwick’s Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (IBRB) is breaking new ground in building design. The £33m facility has been constructed with a cutting-edge offsite
approach featuring Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and Kooltherm Insulated Pipe Support Inserts. The research building, designed by Hawkins/Brown and Fairhursts
Design Group, will provide world-class facilities for over 300 biomedical researchers helping to deepen our understanding of the origins and mechanistic basis of diseases of the brain and body. Working closely with the project team, which included Willmott Dixon and Hoare Lea, NG Bailey has manufactured and assembled much of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations at its specialist offsite facility in Bradford. This specification included the installation of over 20,000 lm of Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and Kooltherm Insulated Pipe Support Inserts, with onsite fitout carried out by specialist contractor Insulation & Cladding Services Ltd (ICS). The University of Warwick set a target to complete at least 50%
of the building work using offsite methods. NG Bailey helped to achieve this with a bespoke, five-storey ‘megariser’, which contains all of the buildings’ primary wet and dry services. The riser was delivered to site in eight sections, greatly reducing the number of deliveries and disruption to neighbours and allowing the installation to be completed in two days compared with the 15 weeks it would have taken with traditional methods. The sections were constructed horizontally at the NG Bailey facility and were lifted and installed using a crane – cutting time spent working at height. As with all offsite work, careful pre-design was essential to ensure
the ‘megariser’ and services were aligned correctly once in-situ. The project team collaborated closely with the use of BIM technologies and this process was supported through the specification of Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and Kooltherm Insulated Pipe Support Inserts. These products are supported with bespoke BIM objects which can be freely downloaded from

Bailey explained: “By using offsite manufacture to produce the MEP elements, we removed circa 11,000 working hours from the project and reduced deliveries by around 190 HGV vehicles. The Client set
the challenge of at least 50% of the construction being delivered through offsite techniques – and this was achieved. “This greatly reduced the carbon footprint of the project and the
completed building is expected to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Building services play a significant part in reaching this target and we carefully developed a specification which will keep the building’s energy use to a minimum.” Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation is one of the most thermally
efficient pipe insulation materials in common use. This allowed the project team to effectively insulate the full range of pipe diameters on the project with a minimal thickness of insulation, supporting a faster, installation both in the factory and as part of the onsite work completed by ICS. The project team also carefully addressed the risk of heat loss
through pipe supports by installing Kingspan Kooltherm Insulated Pipe Support Inserts. The premium performance inserts effectively

limit thermal bridging through the supports and form an effective vapour barrier. For larger diameter pipework, the inserts are supplied with a metal spreader plate which prevents insulation compression, ensuring the efficiency of the pipework is maintained over time.
