SHOW PREVIEW Southern Manufacturing & Electronics
SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING & ELECTRONICS IS MORE INTERNATIONAL THAN EVER
I
n the fast-paced world of engineering, Southern Manufacturing & Electronics is the go-to place to keep up to date with the latest innovations. It will run from 6 to 8 February 2024 and will host a larger number of overseas companies than ever before, propelling the event firmly onto the international stage. The high level of interest has prompted the organisers to expand the stand space to meet the demand. A distinctive feature of the show is its diverse array of exhibitors, split evenly between mechanical engineering and electronics. The absence of physical barriers fosters cross- disciplinary exploration, allowing visitors to stumble upon companies they might not otherwise encounter. Technology Trails strategically guide visitors through areas of specialisation to enhance the discovery experience.
The show moved to its present Hampshire location in 2008 and was the first event to be held in the newly-built Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre in 2018. Over its long history, the show has grown continuously, now attracting visitors and exhibitors from all over the world. It attracts big-name manufacturers but is also extremely accessible to engineering SMEs and small vendors. The organisers operate an open access policy whereby larger firms are discouraged from dominating the space.
Having a mixture of companies of all sizes gives the expo a special vibe unlike that of other shows. Testament to this, and to its effectiveness as a business forum, is the high rate of return bookings. A large percentage of Southern Manufacturing & Electronics participants are regular returnees and many have been with the show since its inauguration in 1997. For those involved in design, production or procurement, the exhibition is a must-attend event. It brings together a rich amalgamation of engineering firms covering a vast spectrum of industries showcasing the latest in machine tools, tooling, workholding, robotics and other autonomous handling, test, measurement, inspection and metrology equipment, and materials supply including metals, plastics and composites. There will be mechanical, electrical, electronic, electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components and assemblies, SMT technology, PCB manufacturing and box build services, mechatronics assembly, plastic injection and rubber mouldings, cables, connectors, sensors, drives, rotary encoders and linear scales, fasteners, pressings, wireforms, springs, gaskets, and more. Production planning aids as well as business and manufacturing software are also well represented, and so too are a wide variety of subcontract services.
Other diverse and no less essential items on offer will include production and planning aids,

oil and coolant supply, workshop equipment, dust and fume extraction, humidity control, workplace storage systems, bespoke case and foam manufacture, plastic packaging, injection moulding, hand tools, adhesives, industrial flooring, waste removal and recycling, training, freight services and financial consultancy. Automation will take centre stage, driven by a skills shortage throughout Europe and the battle to recover from the impacts of Brexit, supply chain disruptions and rising costs. The Industry 4.0, reshoring of production and green energy solutions on show will all help. So too does additive manufacturing, which continues its progress towards becoming a mainstream production technique. The presence of Additive- X, Bentec, Creat3D, IPFL, Matsuura and TLM Laser will reinforce that.
Metrology and inspection will be well covered by Aberlink, Keyence, LK, Mitutoyo, Optimax, Vision Engineering and Zeiss. CGTech will showcase its VERICUT 9.4 software, which streams data to enhance the connectivity between the machine and the virtual simulation, allowing real-time monitoring of production. Anyone looking to source vibration,
temperature, pressure, force, acceleration, position or strain sensors will be spoiled for choice. Mountz Torque, Strainsense, Variohm, Interlink / Calman, Schurter, Aerco, Process Parameters, and Thermal Protection and Controls will all offer them. Likewise cable assembly offerings will abound on the stands of Strainsense, Deval, K Lacey, Corintech, Gem Cable Solutions, Incap, Nicab, Advanced Rework, Selwyn, Aerco, and Thermal Protection and Controls. Having such strength in depth across so many different technologies is one of the facets of the show that stands out. In addition to the exhibition and demonstration areas, the event features two free technical seminar programmes covering mechanical and electrical engineering. They offer valuable learning opportunities, addressing the technical, managerial, and environmental challenges faced by manufacturers today. Presentations will include how to enhance a sales team's performance, CE and UKCA marking compliance, sustainable practices in manufacturing, management skills coaching including how to address the challenges of hybrid working, and digital process management. Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2024 will once again co-locate with AutoAero, a specialist theme within the exhibition dedicated to aerospace and automotive engineering. The Farnborough site has ample free parking and convenient transport links. There is a complimentary bus service between Farnborough's railway stations and the showground. Admission and parking are also free.
