manufacturer of forged and machined components that trusts Contrinex distance measuring photoelectric sensors to ensure that the correct gear model is selected in an assembly. The automotive manufacturer has a choice of


two gears, which can both be fitted into the same location in the assembly. Therefore, they need a reliable and ideally auditable method to ensure that the assembly contains the correct gear for the version being produced. Utilising the fact that the height of the


assembled component differs depending on which gear model has been mounted, automated identification of the assembly type is offered by using a distance measurement sensor. Because space is limited, a compact sensor with a long sensing range is required.

DTL-C23PB diffuse laser distance measurement sensors, available from PLUS Automation, offer an operating range of 20 to 100mm in a small 30 x 20 x 12mm sensor. Its compact size and IP67 / IP69 K- rated housing make it suitable for this industrial environment. Whilst the DTR-C23PB sister sensors offer a


longer 200mm sensing range, the DTL-C23PB was selected because it uses a laser light source which provides a small beam spot 1.5mm in diameter, which is ideal for accurately measuring


the curved surface at the top of the assembly. The sensor is part of a Poka-Yoke system


which stops the production process if the incorrect gear assembly is presented to the gearbox, thus correct assembly is ensured for the manufacturer and in turn for their customer.

esigned specifically for accurate measurement of liquid flow rates in high-pressure applications, even if the flow rate is fluctuating rapidly, the new SBZ224 flow sensor from ifm electronic is ideal for monitoring and logging the performance of high-


pressure cleaning systems. Typical applications include use in meat processing plants where customers demand detailed records to show that cleaning, which is often performed with short bursts of liquid spray, has been carried out to the required standards. ifm’s innovative SBZ224 sensors have a flow rate measuring


range of one to 50 litres per minute and can be used at pressures up to 200 bar. Thanks to their mechatronic flow measuring principle, the sensors have a response time of just 100ms, which not only allows them to deliver dependable results in spray systems, but also means that measurement accuracy is unaffected by air bubbles and turbulence. An integrated temperature sensor with a measuring range of


-10 to +100ºC is also featured and, in many applications, this eliminates the need for a separate temperature sensor, which saves money and reduces plant complexity. Both temperature and flow measurements are accessed via an IO-Link interface, which is also used for parameterisation and diagnostics. In addition, conventional switching, analogue and frequency outputs are provided. The wetted parts of SBZ224 flow sensors are fabricated from


stainless steel which is highly resistant to attack by all common cleaning agents, and the sensors have an IP65/67 ingress protection rating.
