PROTECTING ECOSYSTEMS Fast response to liquid quality changes can be critical in other applications as well. Collo recently conducted a study to find out how unsupervised machine learning could be used to detect abnormal qualities in sewage waste. The study was conducted together with the City of Oulu waterworks in Northern Finland. “Water treatment is important worldwide and with our technology it is possible to supervise the quality of both tap water and sewage in real-time,” Järveläinen says. “The problem with sewage is that if harmful chemicals pass through undetected, it can be a threat for both the water treatment process and the environment.” In the study, Collo collected data from the sewage well for a couple of weeks and then compressed the information into a couple of models showing how the process should look when it was working well. After that, the analyser monitored the sewage quality according to these models. “With the aid of machine learning, our system


was able to pinpoint the liquid quality deviations in the process,” Järveläinen says. “The study showed that our analyser could be used on a large scale to monitor industrial wastewater streams for early detection of anomalies like chemical spillage, product losses or other abnormal behaviour.”

ACCURATE AND AFFORDABLE HIGH GAS MASS FLOW MEASUREMENT

ögtlin Instruments has released a new product-line that makes high gas mass flow measurement and control accurate and affordable.


The new d·flux multi series is a pressure


differential flow measurement device that is affordable, reliable and versatile. Flow ranges from 0-350ln/min up to 1,400ln/min up to 14 bara and from -20 to +60°C. Advance communication, like Modbus, Profinet and EtherCAT, but also all common analog signals are available. The advanced configuration is done through a free app that you can download on your phone or tablet and with which you connect to the unit over Bluetooth. You can program up to 15 different gasses in 15 different profiles (pre-programmed applications). The d·flux is IP54, 316L and has BSPP 1” process connections.


The unit has a I/O port that can be


controlled by the flow meter/controller manually or through f.i. alarms, warnings or pre-set conditions. Due to the unique internal flow conditioning, there are no long straight in and outlet required, the d·flux can be built in very compact locations. Vögtlin’s lead engineer Paul Kümin says: “This is the best of the best. We listened to our customers wishes and added years of company experience to their requirements” The product is supported by the


standard three-year warranty and service network of the Vögtlin flow Instruments organisation. The unit is engineered in Switzerland and will be manufactured in German. Product manager Paul de Waal states: “Passion for flow builds fantastic flow meters!”
