ew developments in materials and advanced processes are driving growth in the use of holography, bringing digital


innovation and interaction ever closer as the technology opens-up to new applications. Indeed, we are currently seeing it find a way into ever more sophisticated applications and this includes the medical arena, where 3D imaging lies at the heart of advances in cardiac surgery. In the USA, holography is improving the


information and resources available to surgeons, helping them to visualise a patient’s heart while they are in the operating theatre - the technology has been designed by doctors to provide real-time information in 3D and direct view of internal tools, such as catheters. Early trials have revealed, for the first time, that holograms can improve accuracy when used during minimally invasive surgery to treat heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias). Doctors behind the development believe

that by using the technology, they can superimpose holograms of critical information into their environment while remaining aware of the patient and other people in the room. Jon Silva, an engineer who has worked with his wife Dr Jennifer Silva, to bring forward the project, explained that using the augmented reality hologram in the theatre provides doctors with an idea of how the electrical signal travels across the surface of the heart. exact spot to stop the arrhythmias. Another interesting new development in the medical arena sees a partnership between Leia and Infuse Medical utilise 3D holographic imagery to ‘revolutionise’ medical teaching and training without the need for head-mounted virtual glasses or clunky equipment. New content platforms and holographic display equipment are set to enable medical educators and students to switch between 2D and 3D display with no interruption to their existing workflow, helping to create an enhanced, in- depth and seamless learning experience. The developers anticipate that spatial memory will dramatically increase now that


the services are combined, while David Fattal of Leia added: “…through this partnership… we are poised to revolutionise the training experience for many medical device companies - a very exciting prospect”. The capacity for holography to embrace and incorporate other data forms and recognition information continues to grow in importance, creating hitherto unthought-of applications. With continued advancements, there is no reason why the technology will not continue to play a critical part at the leading edge of medical equipment innovation.
