PiM over CPri CaPaBiLity For HanDHeLD Base station anaLysers


Anritsu Corporation has introduced PIM over CPRI software for its BTS Master MT8220T and MT822xB handheld base station analysers that allow passive intermodulation (PIM) measurements to be made from the ground for the first time. By eliminating the need for network operator installation and maintenance crews and contractors to climb the tower to test for PIM, the new BTS Master-based solution is a much more cost- and time-efficient tool for ensuring optimal operation of wireless networks. PIM over CPRI is a unique and patented PIM measurement


technique that uses live traffic, unlike traditional RF PIM measurements that require a site be turned down for tests to be conducted. All that is required for PIM over CPRI to be performed are two Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers and an optical tap. Another benefit is that no component in the transmission line needs to be disconnected, eliminating the possibility of PIM being introduced into the system due to elements such as metal shavings or improperly torqued connectors. If the BTS Master with PIM over CPRI capability detects PIM at


the ground level, the network operator can dispatch a tower crew to perform a traditional RF PIM measurement using the Anritsu PIM Master MW82119B battery-operated, high power, por table passive intermodulation analyser. For rooftop base stations where PIM is detected, the Anritsu PIM Hunter test probe can be used. If the system is PIM-free, the network operator can conduct other tests to locate issues affecting the site, such as interference. The BTS Master handheld base station analysers combine 30


analysers into one to meet vir tually every measurement need at a base station. It includes 20MHz bandwidth modulation for high- quality testing; a vector signal generator with frequency coverage of 400MHz to 6GHz for comprehensive DAS and receiver testing, and sweep modes for reliable interference hunting and analysis. A convenient touch screen GUI allows measurements to be performed quickly and easily, even in bright sunlight.

Countersink MeasureMent


Third Dimension has launched a countersink measurement solution for its GapGun range. It can calculate the dimensions of a countersink hole to accurately predict the flushness of fasteners once fitted. It can operate in real time on the production lines of aircraft and cars, and also in the energy and marine markets. Last year in the commercial aviation industry


alone, 1,481 planes were manufactured with a total estimated 296 million countersinks. The average requirement is to measure five per cent of each aircraft’s 200,000 countersink holes, meaning 10,000 countersink holes would have to be measured for every commercial aircraft produced. Done manually, these checks rely heavily on the competencies of the operator and are extremely time consuming. The system enables the prediction of fastener flushness much faster


and more accurately than mechanical gauge, with the addition of a fully auditable data trail. Tolerance bands can be pre-set, the measurement is recorded against these and then the result can be read onscreen or automatically sent to a PC to enable comparison and analysis. Countersinks are notoriously difficult to measure in the industry; one of the


main challenges for manufacturers is finding a way that factors in how to calculate the centre of the hole. The Third Dimension solution addresses this with a specially designed standoff integrated into the sensor. This enables the system to calculate this crucial point to quality check the dimensions of hole, before the fastener is fixed in place.
