SENSORS & INSTRUMENTATION REVIEW

“I have particularly enjoyed doing a live demonstration of our wireless instrumentation system, Microstrain, and a presentation in the Sensors & Instrumentation seminar theatre on optical fibre sensors because we distribute a number of different types of optical fibre sensors and number of sensor solutions.” Ramage also discussed the benefits to

the event: “This year’s visitors seem more targeted, with people coming in with specific requests and queries – and the great thing is, everybody we have met is new to us.” LabVIEW NXG and VirtualBench were

among the products on display at the National Instruments (NI) stand.

SEMINARS Erik van Hilten, senior technical marketing engineer at NI, presented two talks in the Sensors & Instrumentation seminar theatre on data acquisition (DAQ). He provided advice on what you should know before building DAQ systems and advice on understanding DAQ system accuracy. Visitors had the opportunity to choose from 25+ seminar sessions led by industry experts and professional bodies in the Sensors & Instrumentation and Micro Nano MEMS seminar theatres. Neil Hamilton kicked off the seminar sessions with the talk ‘The new IoT opportunity, Sensing-as-a-Service’. Andrew Ramage, director of business

development at Techni Measure, delivered a seminar on fibre optic sensors on Day Two of the show. Techni Measure’s fibre optic sensors are intrinsically safe and have applications across many different industries including HERO testing in military applications and in real-time monitoring on-board aircraft. The seminar, while being educational, also allowed Ramage to discuss the products that Techni Measure specialises in:

Stanley Qubit, the robot superstar, entertained visitors

his company of having a stand at the event: “The Sensors & Instrumentation show, year-on-year, is ideal for us because it is what Techni Measure does – sensors and instrumentation. We always have a good show here.” Techni Measure was joined by SPEKTRA and Conax Technologies at the show. Ramage added: “We are really enjoying working with SPEKTRA from Germany for our calibration systems. Conax Technologies are also here at the show displaying their temperature sensors for all environments and compression sealed field throughs.” Ramage concluded: “It has been a good

well rounded show with good attendance and we are really enjoying it – we are generating a lot of business.” Techni Measure’s director Ian Ramage

The show presented opportunities for companies to make new connections

described Sensors & Instrumentation 2017 as “one of the best yet”. He said that while the event had always delivered in terms of audience, this year’s show rated particularly highly in terms of new business: “More than half of the people we met over the course of the last couple of

days are new to us,” he said. “What more can you ask for from a show?”

NEW FEATURES The Techni Measure demonstration could be seen at Connecting Industry LIVE. Other demonstrations included one from Chris Middleton who discussed the business impact of robotics and AI and another from Chris Evans and Jeremy Shinton from Mitsubishi Electric on An introduction to Industry 4.0 and the road to digitalisation. The first ever public demonstration of the Yuneec H520 Hexacopter also took place at Sensors & Instrumentation. This new drone has an interchangeable

thermal camera, which means that if they wanted to, a forward-thinking company could put their own technology into it and sense for different materials. The drone is also able to fly pre-

determined routes, allowing users to control the flight path from the ground before setting off, saving vital flight time. While some drones have very limited sensor capabilities, they are never 100 per cent crash proof as they are unable to sense oncoming traffic or obstacles. The H520 provides obstacle avoidance capabilities thanks to the use of Intel Real Sense technology which helps with a safer more reliable flight. Visitors also had the opportunity to

complete a lap in the PR Electronics Formula 1 car simulator and delve deeper into the field of robotics with Alfie, a humanoid robot ‘with a difference’. The Innovation Showcase area meanwhile, provided a snapshot of the range of developments on show at the exhibition in the centre of the hall.

2018 SHOW The UK’s only national sensors event will return to the NEC Birmingham on 25 and 26 September next year, when it comes together with the country’s only national electronics exhibition, What’s New in Electronics Live (WNIE Live) to offer visitors a bumper engineering experience.
