outhern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Farnborough from 6-8
February 2018 for its 20th anniversary event. While new products and innovations abound at the UK’s longest- running and largest annual engineering show, arguably the most striking innovation of all to be found at Southern 2018 is the venue itself. From 2018 the show moves into its new
home, and its first ever permanent venue. Replacing the show’s impressive but oft- maligned temporary structure, the brand new £30m Hall 1 development at the Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre will completely transform the visitor experience and provide the foundations for the show’s further development as it enters its third decade. The 20,000m² Hall 1 complex, designed by award-winning architects Terence O’Rourke, is the largest exhibition venue to be built in the UK for 20 years and offers ultra-modern, world-class facilities, easy access and free onsite car parking for 3,000 cars. The new venue provides a fitting
backdrop for the plethora of new products being unveiled at the show, as well as the return of many familiar faces. Around 800 firms are expected to take part. Participating companies range from major international manufacturers to small independent component vendors and engineering service providers. This means that designers and engineers can meet an extraordinary range of firms in a very short space of time. Since moving to Farnborough a decade ago, the event has increasingly come to the attention of European vendors too, meaning that Southern Manufacturing offers a very rare opportunity to meet companies which do not often venture to these shores. The event is divided roughly equally
between electronics and mechanical engineering production. Components and sub-assemblies across both disciplines are well represented, making the show one of the key annual events for buyers and design engineers. In a typical year,

nearly half the visitors arrive with components on their shopping lists. As usual, Southern 2018 will offer plenty to engage their interest. Some of the larger component
distributors present this year include Easby Electronics, Midas Components, Torberry Connectors and Variohm Eurosensor amongst others. Optimas Components will showcase a small selection from its extensive range of over 14,000 standard parts. Highlights on stand this year will include a wide range of specialised components for stringent hygienic applications, such as in the food processing, medical and healthcare sectors. Another notable name is Transfer Multisort Elektronik, one of the largest distributors of components in Europe. Southern Manufacturing plays host to a
large number of proprietary brands too, many of whom will be launching new products for 2018. For example, Connector specialist ODU will be showing its new Mini-Snap self-securing circular connection, used in a multitude of applications. Once mated Mini-Snap locks itself into the receptacle and can no longer be separated by just pulling on the cable. The ODU Mini-Snap is available in a wide range of sizes and designs, and a choice of three basic keyings. Systems integration is yet another

comprehensive range of solutions to practically any motion requirement from linear to circular, and heavy duty to XYZ systems. Hepco's DTS system will be in action with an Omron Delta robot. The spider-like robot will be picking up chocolate bars and, at speed, moving them to the other side of the track system, demonstrating how the two leading technologies can be combined to reduce process time and increase efficiency. HMK Automation will showcase its TM5 Cobot, which merges systems that usually function separately in conventional robots. According to the firm, the TM5 is the only collaborative robot to incorporate simple programming, a fully integrated vision system and the latest safety standards in a single unit. The comprehensive programme explores an extremely wide range of topics, from technical sessions covering areas such lithium ion batteries, CE Marking, 3D Print and Industry 4.0, to more management-oriented themes such as best practice in manufacturing, implementing Lean and how to market technical products effectively.
