PRODUCTS FLOW, LEVEL & CONTROL

FLOW METERS FOR USE WITH FOOD PRODUCTS

Titan Enterprises has achieved certification under NSF/ANSI 169 for its 800 Series turbine flow meters and Beverage meter as equipment for food products. This accreditation is especially important for manufacturers of food production and handling machinery who can now include an 800 Series or Beverage meter secure in the knowledge that it has met NSF-standards for food production. NSF are an independent, accredited organisation, that test,

audit and certify products to develop public health standards and certifications that help protect food, water, consumer products and the environment. Trevor Forster, managing director of Titan Enterprises,

comments: “Increasingly food and beverage manufacturers wishing to meter production flow are requiring the assurance of NSF certification that the flow measurement devices they choose are completely compatible with their products.” As part of the NSF-certification process, Titan Enterprises was

required to submit samples of the 800 Series and Beverage meter to NSF for analysis. The detailed analysis by NSF included a technical review, a materials review, physical evaluation and a literature/marking evaluation. The supply chain for materials and components used in the 800 Series and Beverage meters was traced and needed certification of each element. In addition, NSF carried out a pre-audit check of Titan Enterprises UK production facility and control systems. To maintain its NSF listing, Titan Enterprises, as with all NSF listed companies, will be subject to further unannounced audits. The 800 series turbine flow meter is designed to give high

performance over six flow ranges from 0.05 to 15l/min. The totally non-metallic wetted components of the device make the 800-seies flow meter the ideal choice for the metering of food and beverage materials. Titan Enterprises beverage flow meter is designed specifically as a flow measurement solution for the drink dispensing industries including beer wines and spirits. They give high performance and competitive pricing with a flow range up to 10 litres per minute. They have totally non-metallic wetted components which makes them the ideal choice for the metering of food-based products.

Bronkhorst manufactures a wide variety of mass flow meters and controllers. As a standard, all instruments are factory calibrated using highly accurate calibration devices, traceable to international standards. Accredited calibrations may be required for various reasons,

e.g. to meet specific demands from authorities, or for instruments that will be used as reference standards. Bronkhorst’s Calibration Centre performs ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited calibrations for gas flow meters and controllers in the range of 0.7mln/min up to 6,200ln/min. This scope of calibration services could recently be extended thanks to the development of an advanced calibration system for low liquid flow calibrations. With this system Bronkhorst can offer their Coriolis mass flow meters and controllers in flow ranges of 1g/h up to 30kg/h with ISO 17025 accredited calibration.

ONLINE FLOW METER SELECTION TOOL

ABB has developed an online flow meter selection tool to help users to quickly and easily find the right device for their application. The tool provides a simple step-by-step guide to flow meter selection and sizing, enabling users to narrow down the best solution from a wide range of available meter types and options. The tool is easy to use, with editable

information boxes and dropdown menus presented in a series of stages to help users enter and select data. The process begins with mandatory stages asking the user to specify their process conditions, including temperature and pressure, and details on the medium being measured. Depending on the medium selected, the tool automatically populates with data on presumed characteristics such as density, viscosity and conductivity, each of which can be adjusted if required. Three optional stages allow users to

refine their search criteria by providing extra information on the characteristics of the medium, plus any specific details

about the application and the installation conditions. Once all this information has been

entered, users are presented with a list of the recommended products based on their criteria. By selecting their preferred option from this list, users can then produce a basic configuration that can be saved and exported as a PDF, Excel or XML file and used as the basis of a specification. CAD files can also be downloaded for certain meter types. The creation of the tool is part of ABB’s

ongoing drive to help users to put in place the right measurement strategies that can transform the efficiency and performance of their processes.

FLOW METERS ENHANCE PLANT SAFETY AND RELIABILITY

Facilities with safety instrumented systems can now take advantage of the new SIL 2/3 functional safety certification of Emerson’s Rosemount 8800 Vortex flow meters, per IEC 61508, which can help mitigate risk, enhance plant safety, and protect personnel. The non-clog Rosemount 8800 Vortex

portfolio offers safety and reliability features such as online removable sensors to reduce process downtime and a critical process valve for aggressive applications which increases personnel safety by preventing exposure to hazardous fluids. A variety of configurations are available to suit a variety of requirements, including flanged, wafer, reducer and quad meter body styles, supporting installations up to 300mm line sizes. Per an accredited third-party assessment, a single Rosemount 8800 Vortex meter

may be used up to SIL 2. The Dual Vortex meter is capable of up to SIL 3 and offers a simple drop-in solution to reduce installation costs. This configuration includes single or dual shedder bar(s), dual sensing elements, and dual transmitters for redundancy and 1oo2 voting to reduce unexpected shutdowns. Exclusive to Emerson, the Rosemount 8800 Quad Vortex uses a dual shedder bar,

quadruple sensor, and quadruple transmitter configuration to meet hardware fault tolerances and eliminate the need for multiple flow meters. This option offers the highest level of reliability to guard against spurious trips using 2oo3 voting and includes a fourth transmitter for process control. “The new addition of SIL 2/3 certification allows Emerson to offer the most

comprehensive Vortex portfolio to address the importance of plant safety, process availability, and measurement stability,” says Wally Baker, director of product marketing for Rosemount Vortex flow meters.
