help meet legislative requirements and current best practice. The course also adopts a blended

Everyone’s heard the phrase ‘lift with your legs, not with your back’, and it’s something that’s said with good reason. Even in offices, manual handling is something that’s encountered on a semi-regular basis. Whether it’s lifting heavy office supplies or warehouse SKUs, there’s always potential to do yourself an injury

ndeed, manual handling is one of the most common causes of injury at work

and causes over a third of all workplace injuries. According to figures collected by the HSE, in 2017 approximately half a million cases were reported of work- related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). In particular, the risk factors causing

MSDs can be found in virtually every workplace from commerce to agriculture, health services to construction, often causing pain or injury in the joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and structures that support limbs, neck and back. But these injuries can be prevented by organisations making sure that they are equipped with the right knowledge and skills.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFE MANUAL HANDLING Without the correct training/awareness of manual handling, employees can put themselves and many others at risk. This can also cause significant bodily harm in the form of joint strain, slipped discs and muscular strain. Such injuries can be both long term and short term, depending on

the magnitude of the incident. Some injuries caused by manual handling accidents, especially to your back, can even be irreversible. In order to prevent and or reduce the risk

of injury from incorrect manual handling, it’s therefore important to undertake correct expert manual handling training. That’s not to say that the right technique alone means that any handling challenge can be taken without risk to health, but the correct technique and risk awareness can greatly reduce the likelihood of sustaining injury.
