IIOT - BRIDGING THE GAP WITH A GATEWAY

It’s become fashionable to talk about IIoT and there are a lot of devices out there promising to give you more connectivity, more data, more information, but it really is a minefield

N

ew machines and equipment by design will doubtless have good

connectivity, but the real challenges are that a lot of installed equipment will have outdated controllers at their heart, or machine builders may have ceased trading. To overcome problems involved in

upgrading existing equipment, Weintek have used their extensive experience in HMI design to develop IIoT gateway solutions to help bridge the gap. With support for in excess of 300 industry protocols there’s bound to be one you can use for your application. The Weintek gateway products are the

cMT-G01, G02, G03 and G04 offering Ethernet, Serial and Wi-Fi options.

CHOOSING AN IIOT GATEWAY For new installations, the cMT-G01 (Ethernet & Serial) and cMT-G02 (Ethernet, Serial & Wi-Fi) are a great fit, however the bigger challenges as mentioned before are often found with older equipment – this is where the cMT-G03 (serial bridge) and cMT-G04

(ethernet bridge) come in. The cMT-G03 acts as a serial bridge, so effectively the serial cable can be cut and spliced in between a PLC and HMI allowing it to listen in. Similarly, the cMT-G04 is also an ethernet switch so in order to splice your equipment into your network you can simply connect in the cMT-G04 without the need to put your PLC or controller directly on a network – avoiding IP address/subnet clashes.

WHAT CAN A GATEWAY DO, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? The simple answer ‘data’! Gateways can help provide accurate real-time data that can be published out via MQTT (a lightweight Publish/Subscribe mechanism), via OPC UA, or to a MySQL or MS SQL Database. The collected data can be used to: • Minimise downtime by getting early warning of material running low rather than relying on the operators • Get timely alarm notifications to improve machine operation and reliability • Build meaningful history to aid business
