MARSTON’S BREWERY CREATES SPACE FOR 14 MILLION BOTTLES OF BEER WITH TEMPORARY WAREHOUSING
POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS Marston’s can now operate a more efficient customer service. This was shown by Tesco’s supplier level performance whereby out of 600 suppliers, Marston’s was one of only six to achieve over 99 per cent service levels. These new industrial buildings were instrumental in building stronger, more positive relationships. This is now possible due to limiting off-site and unneeded storage. It also means that Marston’s can plan
Since the 2008 Recession, the UK economic situation has had its ups and downs. Uncertainty in the economic market is commonplace and companies have to find new ways to grow their profits and increase productivity. Marston’s Brewery’s partnership with Spaciotempo, leading provider of temporary structures in the UK, meant that it found a comprehensive solution to on-site storage and grow its business no matter what the market conditions

environments, are often seen as a short term solution to storage issues. Although this is true, more and more businesses are turning to using temporary storage solutions for longer term provisions to allow themselves to be as agile and flexible as possible – adapting to orders as they come in. Marston’s Brewery, based in Burton upon Trent did exactly this; installing four structures in 2014 and then adding two more in 2017, the firm increased on-site storage at its plant by 45 per cent – creating space for 14 million bottles of beer.
INEFFICIENCIES IN OFF-SITE Prior to installing the new warehouse facility, Marston’s relied on off-site storage, which lead to inefficiencies in transportation and costs, such as double handling, security and staffing. Moreover, with a trend of large multinationals imposing permanent building freezes in 2018 and 2019 as nationwide market uncertainty grows, the temporary building solution –

particularly for Marston’s– allows for a happy compromise. Companies can grow business through cost-effective storage solutions whilst simultaneously planning for the future, adapting to current and future market conditions. The flexibility of Spaciotempo’s
temporary structure model enabled Marston’s to take down two existing structures on the planned site, then install four gutter-linked warehouses. The five metre high buildings, each measuring 30 x 85m, were completed in under three months, providing 10,200sqm of storage and room for 13,500 pallets. Even when the initial warehouse space
was being installed, Marston’s was planning ahead. Instead of purchasing space in 2015 which may lie empty, Marston’s waited until the space was genuinely necessary due to order growth. In 2017, two temporary warehouses at either end of the existing structures were quickly added offering a total of 2,550sqm more space. Temporary structures allow businesses to add, relocate and remove storage space when it suits the business – flexibility and adaptability is key here.
alongside Spaciotempo to meet needs quickly, and plan future storage additions if necessary, or even remove if orders dry up. In times of both uncertainty and growth, a temporary or semi-permanent storage solution provides a plan for both circumstances and is the permanent source of stability.
FLEXIBILITY ‘Temporary’ structures doesn’t mean that quality suffers as anodised aluminium frames and galvanised steel fixings deliver strength and solidity. A range of walling and roofing options means site owners and operators can choose a style to suit specific usage. Therefore, for Marston’s, it can re-adjust and re-configure its requirements whenever necessary. With the limitations of the confined site in Burton upon Trent, these temporary structures provided a flexible option to industrial building growth and has become an essential part of the firm’s strategy of balancing off-site and on-site storage in the most efficient way. Marston’s innovative use of temporary
structures meant that it is able to stay agile and flexible to market conditions and order changes. It means the company can see what’s right in front of it and plan for the short term - but also keeping an eye on the long term. This better storage and logistics has improved customer service and reduced its cost base, maintaining competitive advantages. Furthermore, the partnership with Spaciotempo provides a base for how companies looking to increase their on-site storage without the large costs and inefficiencies provided by permanent facilities. Uncertainty or no uncertainty, Marston’s storage capabilities are going from strength to strength.
