LENZE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF AUTOMATION INNOVATION K
ick-starting a year of celebrations, Lenze marks the golden anniversary of
its UK operations. 2019 marks a special milestone for Lenze:
the global specialist in Motion Centric Automation is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the launch of its business operations on British soil.
Founded as Simplatroll in 1969 and based in
Bedford, the business quickly established itself as a respected drives and power transmission specialist. At this time, inverters were a new technology and designers that required variable speed mostly used DC drives or mechanical variators. Demonstrating a flair for innovation even in its infancy, the business offered
solutions to its growing customer base, along with a portfolio of supporting products such as clutches, brakes and couplings. Over the five decades that followed, the UK
operation adopted the Lenze brand from its parent company and flourished. An emphasis on recruiting and developing talented young engineers contributed to this growth and established Lenze as a pioneer of automation and control technology. Today, Lenze helps customers to solve complex operational issues. “We are proud to be celebrating our 50th
anniversary in the UK and all we have achieved,” said Eric van den Broek, business lead for Lenze Region West. “Technology has developed rapidly in the time since our
inception and our business has evolved as a result. Today we are focused on advanced motion control solutions for customers, making it easy for them to reap the rewards from Industry 4.0 initiatives, while providing the same flexible and reliable service we are known for. We’ll be celebrating this exciting milestone with several special events and activities throughout the year.” Maintaining its UK base in Bedford, Lenze
now boasts sales of approximately £20m in the UK, employing 45 people, over half of whom are skilled engineers.

BETTER PLANET PACKAGING BOAT SETS SAIL ON ITS SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY S
murfit Kappa has joined forces with prize-winning offshore racing sailor, Tom
Dolan, to raise awareness of its Better Planet Packaging initiative. Like Smurfit Kappa, Tom Dolan and his crew
are committed to circularity and operate a closed loop system on board to reuse, recover and recycle as much as possible. Some of the commitments they have made include banning the use of single-use plastics on their Figaro 3 boat, and reducing their carbon footprint. Collaborating with new partners like Tom
Dolan, that share the company’s goal of reducing
waste and having a positive impact on the environment, is one of the central elements of the Smurfit Kappa Better Planet Packaging initiative. Speaking about his forthcoming voyage, Tom
Dolan said: “Smurfit Kappa’s Better Planet Packaging initiative struck a chord with me because it really aligns with my goals to have the most sustainable boat in the fleet and establish a new benchmark for carbon footprint monitoring.” Steven Stoffer, vice president of development
at Smurfit Kappa, added: “Tom Dolan is as committed to sustainability as he is to his racing career and this is one of the things that made
him stand out to us. The rigour he applies to the selection and handling of all the resources used both on and off board is similar to the rigour we apply to the measurement of our progress against the five strategic sustainability priorities that underpin all our business operations.” Tom Dolan’s next racing event is the Sardinha
Cup which is part of the 2019 French Championship for Offshore Sailing starting on March 30.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY PPE MANUFACTURER WINS MULTIPLE PRODUCT DESIGN AWARDS U
ltrasonic gas detector, impact-resistant gloves, personal hearing protection, and confined-space body harness selected by independent experts for iF Design, Red Dot and Good Design Best 100 product design competitions. Honeywell has announced that several of its industrial safety products were selected as winners in three separate product design awards recently, including the prestigious iF Design, Red Dot and Good Design Best 100 awards. These awards, each of which attracted hundreds of entries and were judged by an international panel of design experts, recognised Honeywell new product designs in multiple categories for their innovative merits; ergonomical, user-centred design; and aesthetic and emotional appeal. Winning products from Honeywell Industrial Safety included the Searchzone Sonik (Red Dot, iF), an ultrasonic gas leak detector that listens
from a distance for the sound signature produced by pressurised gas leaks, instead of requiring a gas cloud to come in contact with the device. Since sound is unaffected by wind and other environmental conditions that may dilute or divert a gas cloud away, the Searchzone Sonik complements other forms of gas detection to help quickly alert personnel of a potential dangerous event faster. Also awarded was the Rig Dog Xtreme (Best
100/Good Design,Red Dot, iF awards), the next generation of impact- and cut-resistant gloves for rugged industry. The ergonomic design was built around end- user needs, which includes increased range of motion, lightweight dexterity with reduced hand fatigue over previous models and high visibility colours that increase low light safety awareness and aid communication gestures between users working in extreme conditions.
Another winner was the Verishield (Red Dot, iF
Design awards), a new ergonomically designed earmuff created for a global workforce — in other words, constructed to fit a variety of ear and head shapes and satisfy a range of applications. The lightweight design and ‘memory’ foam cushions are optimised for comfort and a more consistently sealed fit that helps maintain noise attenuation capacity. Pikachu won a (Red Dot Award). Pikachu is a
full-body harness designed to protect workers at heights or in confined spaces where electrical arc flash hazards are present. The harness features arc flash resistant materials, electrical insulation properties and a global anthropometric fit.
