Schneider Electric releases independent research that reveals sustainability action gap

chneider Electric has commissioned two independent research studies focused on
sustainability in IT and data centre operations and the results reveal a disconnect between intent and action, indicating most of the industry is still at the beginning stage of its sustainability journey. The two studies were conducted by industry
leading analysts at 451 Research and Forrester. They collected data from nearly 3,000 global participants, including the largest colocation and cloud providers, and IT professionals across many segments and organisation sizes. The 451 Research paper revealed a perception-
versus-reality dilemma with many enterprise organisations believing their sustainability programs are more advanced than they are, as
“the maturity evaluations of nearly half of respondents (48%) did not match a previous answer.” The Forrester paper focused on colocation and found 73% of organisations ranked sustainability as their #2 business priority, but only 33% say they have created a strategic sustainability plan. “The research clearly demonstrates that across
the data centre and IT industry, there is a sustainability action gap – the intention appears to be there, but action is lacking,” said Pankaj Sharma, EVP of the Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric. “Of course, IT professionals understand and
have taken steps to address sustainability. But what we lack, with some exception, is comprehensive and supported sustainability action

he Joint Industry Board (JIB) is offering one lucky apprentice the chance to spend six weeks living and working as an electrician in
Brisbane, Australia. The JIB Skills Development Fund will cover the cost of flights,
accommodation, wages and associated costs for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, where the winner will spend time with several contractors in the city. The apprentice will also visit the contractors’ association, union and leading training providers to get a better understanding of how the industry works and compile a report on their experiences of the electrical industry in Queensland, Australia. Previous winners have described how the experience enhanced
their career. To be eligible to apply, the applicant must: • Be in Stage 3 or Stage 4 of the apprenticeship with a JIB-registered training provider;
• Be working for a JIB member (who is also a member of the ECA); • Be a member of Unite the Union; • Hold a valid, in-date passport and driving licence; and • Have the endorsement of their employer and training officer As many people started their applications before the Exchange
was postponed due to Covid-19, JIB has announced that anyone who was eligible at the start of 2020 will remain eligible even if now a qualified electrician. A shortlist of candidates will be invited for interview with a panel of
industry representatives, who will be looking for apprentices who are knowledgeable, confident, and willing to learn. Richard Clarke, chair of the JIB Skills Development Fund Trustees,
said: “We encourage applications from anyone eligible who is interested in pushing themselves to see how far they can go with their electrical career.” The deadline for applications to be received is Friday, October 28

BGEN strengthen its industrial automation offering with acquisition of Radway Control Systems
solutions business, has acquired Radway Control Systems to strengthen its industrial automation offering. The purchase of the

business, which includes the trading and certain assets of the company, will support BGEN’s growth ambitions in sectors including renewables and steel, and increase its presence in the automation aftermarket/service arena. Robin Whitehead, chief
executive at BGEN, said: “When we rebranded to BGEN we stated we wanted to be recognised as an independent market leader in the provision of world class multi- disciplinary engineering solutions for UK and international customers. “Strategic acquisitions were part
of that realising that vision, and the addition of Radway Control Systems provides excellent synergies with our existing technology team and exciting growth opportunities.” Radway Control Systems
specialises in the design and implementation of automation, control and information systems for a wide range of industries including automotive, chemicals, metals, renewables and water. As part of the acquisition,
approximately 30 employees, including the senior management

team, will join BGEN Technology, and Radway Control Systems’ headquarters in Stoke will become part of BGEN’s network of UK regional offices. The transition of the company into
BGEN’s operations will be overseen by Ian Oliver, managing director, technology, at BGEN, and is expected to be completed by Q2 2023. Mr Oliver said: “The acquisition of
the business supports our growth ambitions and it’s great that the senior management team – Jon Taylor and Andrew Stainsby – have joined BGEN Technology. “Radway Control Systems has
some great experience in the industrial automation and digitalisation space, and we’re looking forward to integrating the team into our operations.”
