The IEC 61000-4-5 Surge Standard

In an electrical installation using IoT devices, disruptive surges can appear on power and data lines. Their sources include abrupt load switching and faults in the power system, as well as induced lightning transients from an indirect lightning strike.
The IEC standard necessitates the test of surge immunity in electrical or electronic equipment. The IEC 61000-4-5 standard specifies different classes depending on where the equipment is installed. For each class shown in Table 3 a corresponding peak voltage is applicable. This can be applied line to line (L-L) or line to ground (L-G), depending on the system design configuration.
