BPMA heralds its e-learning platform

Some years ago, the British Pump Manufacturers’ Association launched an initiative in e-learning for the pump industry. It was the first suite of truly independent pumping technology training and is still revered worldwide today, says Steve Schofield, chief executive of the BPMA

I

ndependently accredited and quality-controlled by the NOCN these courses are offered in accordance with the Office of Qualifications

and Examination’s Regulation (Ofqual). It is thought to be the first such accreditation for the pump sector globally. The initiative also forms part of the UK government’s educational framework.

Who are the NOCN and RQF? NOCN is a market-leading international awarding organisation and Government-approved End Point Assessment Organisation that has been operational for 30 years. NOCN Group includes NOCN, NOCN India Skills Foundation, C Skills Awards and One Awards, but for more information, please go to www.nocn.org.uk

E-learning key features • Industry recognised courses; • Professionally voiced and easy to follow; • Accessed from anywhere through a web browser; and

• Easy registration and secure payment. Overall, this training offers a comprehensive

foundation in all aspects of pumps and pumping technology which allows a wider range of learners to obtain the qualifications they need, in a way that suits them. Those passing the final tests can take forward

the credits they earn into apprenticeships, continuing professional development (CPD), and further education such as university entrance, or

simply use them to enhance CVs and aid career progression. There is a suite of two industrially and nationally recognised courses designed to raise the knowledge and awareness of technical pumping issues. NOCN certificates are awarded upon successful

course completion and to address the wider issues covered by the courses, the BPMA also award their own graded certificate where a successful candidate can pass with a Credit or Distinction.

Lectured learning In addition to the highly regarded remote learning programme, the BPMA also offers a suite of classroom-based courses, held regularly at its headquarters in West Bromwich. Alternatively, and if student numbers allow, these courses can be delivered onsite at customers premises. This offers additional flexibility, with reduced travel time and expense, and throughout the pandemic, to maintain continuity, some courses have been offered as Webinars. Presented by an experienced tutor, and in a

modular format, these stand-alone one-day courses are designed to be taken in any order, however, the BPMA recommends that delegates should have taken the Pumping Fundamentals course before moving on to any of the other technical courses. The full programme delivers the following

individual courses: • Pumping Fundamentals; • Pump Selection;

• Pump Testing; • Pump Systems; • Hydraulic Design of Centrifugal Pumps; and • Pump Repair & Maintenance (new two-day course).

Certified Pump System

Auditor Scheme The CPSA scheme is an industry specific professional qualification created and developed by the BPMA, to help in the now essential pursuit of improved energy efficiency across the manufacturing, utilities and building services arena. The objective of the scheme is to help improve

the levels of professionalism in the sector by creating a universally recognised and respected industry ‘standard’ for individuals assessing the operational and energy-use performance of pumps and their related systems. Held over four consecutive days, and presented

by two highly experienced tutors, the course will afford the skills and knowledge to better assess and optimise the efficiency of any pump system. To successfully achieve the CPSA accreditation

(and the benefits that accrue), candidates must undertake the following: • Attend the three-day Pumping System Requirements and Analysis training course and pass an examination;

• Attend the one-day course covering both the ISO 14414 Standard for Energy Assessments of Pump Systems and Pump System Optimisation;

• Carry out a Pump System Audit in accordance with ISO 14414; and

• Produce a Pump System Audit report in accordance with ISO 14414.

CPSA registered engineers will be re-assessed

every three years by the BPMA, which will be a process of identifying that their audits are still in accordance with ISO14414. Engineers who achieve CPSA status will receive

a BPMA Certificate and CPSA photo registration card which identifies that the cardholder is approved to carry out pump system audits. They will also have their photo and details recorded on the CPSA website which promotes the scheme, its qualified individuals and where appropriate, their employing company. For more information on any of the training

offered by the British Pump Manufacturers’ Association, please visit the BPMA website, www.bpma.org.uk.
