Define application requirements Before evaluating connector specifications, it is important to understand the operating conditions and performance requirements of the application.


Environmental conditions The operating environment is often the most significant consideration. Engineers should assess whether connectors will be exposed to rain, washdowns, salt spray, UV radiation, dust, chemicals, mud, or prolonged moisture. Outdoor and mobile applications typically require a higher level of protection than controlled indoor installations.


Mechanical stress and vibration Many industrial and transportation applications subject connectors to continuous vibration, shock and physical impact. Connectors used on engines, rail vehicles, construction equipment, or mobile machinery must maintain a secure electrical connection despite constant movement and mechanical stress.


Electrical requirements The connector must support the required number of contacts, signal types, voltage levels and current ratings. Considering potential future system expansion during the specification stage can help avoid costly redesigns later.


Space constraints Available installation space, cable routing, mounting arrangements and ease of access can all influence connector selection. A suitable form factor is essential for efficient integration and maintenance.
