Schneider Electric has released three independent research studies to better understand the maturity of sustainability initiatives within IT and data centre organisations, and more specifically, where the IT and data centre industry stand in achieving this vision of net-zero IT operations. he results of the studies, conducted by leading industry analysts, were previewed at a broadcast titled The Future is Now: Preparing


IT Infrastructure for Net Zero Operations and revealed a sustainability action gap. Data was independently collected from more


than 3,000 global participants, including the largest colocation and cloud providers, IT solution providers and IT professionals across many segments and organisation sizes, by 451 Research, Forrester and Canalys. Overall, findings consistently demonstrated that


across the data centre and IT industry, there is discrepancy between where companies think they are and implementing full lifecycle sustainability programs across their IT infrastructure. Pankaj Sharma,


executive vice president, Secure Power Division at Schneider Electric, said: “Data centres play a critical role in driving Electricity 4.0 which we believe is the key to changing the trajectory of climate change. As an industry, we have a responsibility to drive forward our environmental commitments with extreme urgency. “We’ve made some progress but to avoid a major energy challenge, all data centres –


including distributed edge data centres – must be more sustainable, efficient, adaptive, and resilient.” Mr Sharma continued: “The research is clear –


the industry knows sustainability needs to be prioritised but challenges still exist to taking action and will take a collaborative effort to overcome. The good news is the technology to take action in sustainability exists today. Now is the time to act.” In addition to releasing these research studies,


Schneider Electric made several new announcements live from its global headquarters in Paris, all of which are designed to help data centre and IT professionals make progress towards their sustainability goals.


Schneider Electric modernises its EcoStruxure


IT software portfolio At its virtual event, Schneider Electric announced the modernisation of its EcoStruxure IT software portfolio for the monitoring and management of sprawling, hybrid IT infrastructure, which has become increasingly complex in the last few years. As IT infrastructure continues to spread,


business continuity is dependent on everything from the smallest end point to the largest data centre. Therefore, edge deployments are now considered as mission critical as centralised data centres, and a new capability of software tools is required to maintain the resiliency and security of the infrastructure.


Sustainability, meanwhile, is emerging as


another significant trend: the energy consumption and carbon footprint of a company’s data centres will need to be measured and managed. Based on internal Schneider Electric


projections, by 2040, total data centre energy consumption will be 2,700 TWh with 60% coming from distributed sites and 40% from data centres. Kevin Brown, SVP


of EcoStruxure Solutions, Secure Power, Schneider Electric, said: “There’s been tremendous change since DCIM first emerged as a software category. “The hybrid IT environment is challenging even the most sophisticated CIO organisation with maintaining the resiliency, security, and sustainability of their IT systems. “We call this trend DCIM 3.0. modernisation comes at a time when 99% of large company chief executives agree that sustainability issues are important to the success of their businesses, security ranked #1 on the Allianz Risk Barometer, and 62% of IT outages can be attributed to infrastructure failures by cloud and colocation suppliers. “As a complete software portfolio, EcoStruxure IT


empowers customers to operate the most resilient, secure, and sustainable IT infrastructure, anywhere,” Mr Brown said. The vendor-neutral capabilities enabled by


EcoStruxure IT deliver value through customer- driven applications, including:


• Monitoring and Management: Device management for power and cooling devices, as well as physical security and environmental monitoring;


• Planning and Modeling: For visualisation, asset tracking, simulation, and change management for over 4000 devices; and


• Custom Solutions and Integrations: Tailored solutions to address unique customer requirements through automated reporting, dashboards, migrations, and custom integrations with EcoStruxure IT and third- party systems or software.
