KENT TRIAL WINS AWARD E W

elcome to the April issue of Electrical Engineering magazine

- my first as the new editor. Although I am not new to

publishing, I am new to the electrical engineering industry so please get in touch with any new products, projects or news that you’d like to share. I can be contacted by email at cwills@datateam.co.uk or by phone on 01622 699194. In this issue we have a special

supplement on Cables & Connectors, along with an issue that is fit to burst with the latest from the Data Centre Management, Electrical Design Software, Hazardous Area Equipment and Lighting & Lighting Controls sectors.

Carly Wills, Editor

lectricity distributor UK Power Networks received the Innovation Project of the Year accolade for its

Kent Active System Management (KASM) trial. KASM was recognised by the judges as an

innovative and industry first project that allows for better real-time analysis of what is happening on the electricity network, making it more reliable. The trial, that took place along the East Kent 132kV electricity distribution network, also allows more renewable energy such as wind and solar generation to safely connect to the network and at a lower cost. Having more renewable generation connected to the network means more customers will have access to cleaner and cheaper energy without compromising on reliability.

NEW HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION TOWER

D

NV GL has been selected by the Norwegian transmission system operator, Statnett, to

provide electrical design services for the development of a new composite high voltage transmission tower. The project is part of Statnett’s research and

development programme ‘Lean Line’, which is designed to build power lines in a safer, faster and cheaper way, to enable easier integration of renewable energy from remote locations into the European power grid. Statnett will be among the first companies in the

world to develop composite towers for 420kV high voltage overhead lines. Traditionally, composite towers have been utilised for systems between 110 and 150kV systems. As part of the project, DNV GL will provide assistance to Statnett in developing a new electrical design. DNV GL’s grid experts focus on the safety and

Over the summer period alone, the Kent Active

Management System (KASM) trial managed to save more than 4,000MWh of what otherwise would have been lost renewable energy production. If the Kent trial is rolled out nationwide, it could save customers over £65m by 2030.

reliability aspects of the transmission tower by developing insulation coordination, earthing/ grounding, electrical stress testing and safety design. The new electrical design will be finalised by the end of 2019, and the validation tests are scheduled for 2020. The construction and operation of the pilot phase is scheduled for 2021.

MORE ACTION NEEDED TO PREVENT CYBER BREACHES AND ATTACKS N

ew statistics from the Department for Digital, Culture,

Media and Sport (DCMS) have shown a reduction in the percentage of businesses suffering a cyber breach or attack in the last year. The 2019 Cyber Security Breaches Survey shows that 32 per cent of businesses identified a cyber security attack in the last 12 months - down from 43 per cent the previous year. However, of those businesses

that did suffer attacks, the typical median number of breaches has risen from four in 2018 to six in 2019. Therefore, businesses and charities suffering cyber attacks and breaches appear to be experiencing more attacks than in previous years.

The most common breaches or

attacks were phishing emails, followed by instances of others impersonating their organisation online, viruses or other malware including ransomware. Digital minister Margot James said: “We know that tackling cyber threats is not always at the top of business and charities lists of things to do, but with the rising costs of attacks, it’s not something organisations can choose to ignore any longer.”

Through the CyberFirst programme, the government is working with

industry and education to improve cyber security and get more young people interested in taking up a career in cyber.
