Case studies

Technical operations trainee at BOC Gases

Who is your apprenticeship with? I completed my apprenticeship with BOC Gases, a member of the Linde Group.

How did you find out about the scheme? I found out about the BOC apprenticeship scheme through gov.uk, where it was advertised. I then found out about the further apprenticeship with Seetec through BOC, who advised me to complete it.

What was the application process like? The application process for BOC was easy. I handed a CV in and I was invited to an assessment and interview day. I carried out basic engineering tasks (mine was building a bridge out of paper and seeing how much weight it could withstand).

What was your first day like? My first day was great, I felt very welcomed and everyone was a great help with showing me round and introducing me to people.

What qualifications are you studying towards? I am studying a foundation degree in electrical and electronic engineering.

What does your apprenticeship entail? I am a customer engineering services operation technician. On a day-to-day basis I am responsible for customer systems, ie installing, commissioning and maintaining all BOC equipment. I complete general maintenance tasks and some written scheme examinations, while also being on a call-out to cover defective equipment on customer sites.

Any standout moments? Completing my NVQ Level 3.

What does the future hold?

Within the next nine months I will fall into the full role, with my own customers and daily jobs. I would then love to progress further up the company and improve my knowledge and qualifications.

Any regrets? No regrets whatsoever, I am being paid to learn while also gaining on-the-job skills. This gave me a sense of independence, and I now have my own money. I have also met some great friends who have helped me progress as an engineer.
