for you? What to consider if you’re thinking of going to university


where you’ll be spending that time. Here’s the lowdown on the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself, and the universities you’re applying to, in order to help make the right choices.

Do I want to remain in education? No surprises here, but going to university is,


f you’re weighing up whether to commit to another three or more years of study, you’ll want to be thorough when it comes to choosing

What do I enjoy? What am I good at? Do you enjoy learning? Are you motivated to study and do research outside the classroom? University timetables incorporate considerable amounts of self- directed study time and not all of this will be organised for you. Lead-in times to deadlines can be longer than you are used to, so the ability to plan independently is necessary.


If you believe your strengths lie in more hands-on pursuits for which academia is not necessary, you may consider a more vocational course or joining the workplace – via an apprenticeship, perhaps, which will also equip you with qualifications.


Where do I want to live? Whether for financial reasons or otherwise, some students choose to stay at home and study somewhere nearby. However, moving out is a rite of passage into adulthood and
