BATTERY CELLS

Investing in the future

Daimler is to spend €20bn on battery cells over the next decade to meet its ambitious target to electrify its entire product line. The company’s immediate plans include

electrification of all passenger cars, trucks, vans and buses by 2022 with a mix of plug-in hybrids, pure battery-powered cars and fuel cell vehicles that use

hydrogen. It hopes to have 130 electrified variants of Mercedes-Benz Cars on sale in four years’ time.

RECORD BREAKING SEASON

Last season’s Formula 1 Championship proved a record-breaking performance for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Team. Not only did Britain’s Lewis Hamilton secure his fih World title and his team’s fih consecutive Constructors’ Championship, several new records for the sport were set too. By winning the final race in Abu Dhabi, Lewis set a new points-scoring record for a Formula 1 season – 408. The Yas Marina victory for Mercedes-Benz also set a new milestone for the most wins by a driver for a single engine manufacturer in F1. Lewis Hamilton has only driven Mercedes-Benz powered cars since he entered Formula 1, first at McLaren, 2007 -2012, then for the works team since 2013. His 73rd victory in the last race of the season surpassed the 72 mark registered by Michael Schumacher for Ferrari between 1996 and 2006. As we head towards the start of the 2019 season, Lewis now has his sights firmly set on eclipsing another record – the 91 victories secured by Michael Schumacher.
