During our chat, I asked him about the influences that have shaped his music. His list of inspirations is ex- tensive, but he highlighted a few key names that left a deep mark on him.

“The list is endless, but some of the first names that come to mind from the electronic music world are Sve- tec, who’s been leading the scene for a long time and made me understand how important the groove is in a track. Crankdat is not only an innovative producer but also a marketing genius who doesn’t take himself too seriously. Tame Impala, a fully self-taught artist who pushes the boundaries of sound design and writes songs that stick in your head forever.”

“Luciid is a close friend, and I admire how he manages to bring his own identity to different styles of music in a creative way. Eczodia, in my opinion, represents the next stage in the development of the harder dance scene, combining elements from different genres and creating a completely new sound.”

He also mentioned how influences outside of electronic music have been important in his life:

“Serj Tankian isn’t just the lead vocalist of the band SoAD, who has been with me since my teenage years, but also does amazing solo projects and is an impres- sive political activist.”

Throughout the interview, it became clear that Per Pleks is not only a talented producer and DJ but also has a deep understanding of the role of an artist in the modern era. I asked him what defines an artist in 2024, and his response was very revealing.

“It’s not something exclusive to 2024 that a creative person who wants to reach a certain level of success must learn many skills besides making music. An artist is someone who can bring their art to the audience. In the past, this was achieved through the support of re- cord labels, good marketing, and a big budget. Nowa- days, in the age of social media, creatives have a lot of power to build a career on their own.”

While many artists are reluctant to embrace social media, Per Pleks sees it as an opportunity:

“I know many musicians don’t enjoy the world of social media, but for me, although it sometimes feels like a full-time job that can create stress, it’s a great oppor- tunity to build a career without relying on labels or ma- nagers. Being an authentic, humble, and open persona- lity is what draws fans to discover more beyond your latest track. They become fans of you, not just your music.”

One of the most personal moments of our conversa- tion was when we talked about his neurodivergence. Per Pleks has been very open about how being neurodi- vergent has impacted his life and career.
