PER PLEKS: THE RISE IN THE POST-PANDEMIC SCENE, NEURODIVERGENCE, AND THE FUTURE OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC


I had the chance to talk with Per Pleks, an artist in the electronic scene who is gaining attention with his uni- que blend of sounds, styles, and authentic and strai- ghtforward approach. Based in Dortmund, Germany, he has been shaping his musical career for nearly a de- cade. However, it wasn’t until the pandemic and the ra- dical changes in the music industry that he truly found his artistic voice and launched his project in 2020.


What I find most intriguing about his journey is how he has gone through several stages of musical explora- tion, from Detroit house to deep house, to more intense genres like drum and bass and dubstep. Per Pleks is a perfect example of how an artist can constantly evol- ve, adapt to changes in the global music scene, and still maintain their essence.


During our conversation, Per Pleks revealed how his neurodivergence diagnosis has deeply influenced both his personal life and his music, allowing him to find a clearer and more tailored approach to his work style. He also discussed the impact of the pandemic on the rave scene and his vision for the future, where he aims to maintain a genuine connection with his community and audience.


We began by talking about his beginnings and how he developed as an artist. Per Pleks was open about his path, sharing details about his life before music and how he got to where he is today.


“I’m from Dortmund, Germany, I’m 29 years old, and I’ve been a producer and DJ for almost 10 years. During the week, I enjoy the calm that comes from gardening jobs and DIY projects. I earned a degree in Real Estate and worked in that industry until I became a full-time mu- sician in April 2023.”


“In musical terms, it’s been a long road to develop and define my tastes. I tried producing pretty much every genre and style that caught my attention at the time. I started with ‘Detroit house’, and ‘deep house’, and also delved into ‘UK garage’. That’s when I discovered my passion for bass music, like ‘drum and bass’, but I also fell in love with the U.S. scene, dominated by ‘dubstep’ and ‘bass house’. For a long time, I didn’t have a clear vision of myself as an artist, but over the years, I lear- ned to see where my strengths and weaknesses lie.”


It was in 2020 when he decided to make a fresh start and create the Per Pleks brand that everything began to make sense for him.


“I knew I needed a creative reset, so in 2020, I foun- ded my Per Pleks project, combining my influences and styles to create a fresh sound for the emerging post-pandemic rave scene. The music I make today is more like an energy form that takes the audience on a journey of surprises and predictable repetitive patter- ns, just like early techno and hardstyle tracks did.”

Tuve la oportunidad de conversar con Per Pleks, un artista en la escena electrónica que está capturando la atención con su mezcla única de sonidos, estilos y su enfoque auténtico y directo. Basado en Dortmund, Alemania, ha estado moldeando su carrera musical durante casi una década. Pero no fue hasta la pan- demia y los cambios radicales en la industria musical cuando realmente encontró su voz artística y lanzó su proyecto en 2020.


Lo que me parece más interesante sobre su trayectoria es cómo ha pasado por varias etapas de exploración musical, desde el Detroit house, el deep house, has- ta géneros más intensos como el drum and bass y el dubstep. Per Pleks es un ejemplo perfecto de cómo un artista puede evolucionar constantemente, adaptarse a los cambios en la escena musical global y, al mismo tiempo, mantener su esencia.

Comenzamos hablando sobre sus inicios y cómo se formó como artista. Per Pleks se mostró abierto sobre su camino, compartiendo detalles sobre su vida antes de la música y cómo llegó a donde está hoy.


“Soy de Dortmund, Alemania, tengo 29 años y llevo casi 10 años como productor y DJ. Durante la sema- na, disfruto de la calma que me ofrecen los trabajos de jardinería y proyectos de bricolaje. Hice un diploma en Bienes Raíces y trabajé en esa industria hasta que me convertí en músico a tiempo completo en abril de 2023.”


“En términos musicales, tuve un largo camino para de- sarrollarme y definir mis gustos. Intenté producir prác- ticamente todos los géneros y estilos que me llamaban la atención en ese momento. Empecé con ‘Detroit hou- se’, ‘deep house’ y también incursioné en el ‘UK garage’. Ahí descubrí mi pasión por la música de bajos, como el ‘drum and bass’, pero también me enamoré de la es- cena estadounidense, dominada por ‘dubstep’ y ‘bass house’. Durante mucho tiempo no tenía una visión clara de mí mismo como artista, pero con los años aprendí a ver dónde estaban mis fortalezas y debilidades.”


Fue en 2020, cuando decidió hacer un nuevo comienzo y crear la marca Per Pleks, que todo empezó a cobrar sentido para él.


“Sabía que necesitaba un reinicio creativo, así que en 2020 fundé mi proyecto Per Pleks, combinando mis in- fluencias y estilos para crear un sonido fresco para la emergente escena rave post-pandemia. La música que hago hoy es más una forma de energía que lleva a la audiencia en un viaje de sorpresas y patrones repeti- tivos predecibles, como lo hacían las pistas del techno temprano y el hardstyle.”
