Message from the Chairman

This version of “Lumbee Today” covers a number of items that show the continued support from our Tribe to our citizens. In this edition, we highlight the dedication of our Veterans Memorial that represents those individuals who have proudly served our military in all branches of services. Our Lumbee veterans are amazing individuals who deserve to be honored and the Veterans Memorial will do that each and every day on the grounds of our tribal headquarters.

This issue will also provide updates from the annual National Congress of American Indians, where a number of Tribal Council members and myself spoke on the floor in support of state recognized tribes remaining members of the organization. I am so thankful for all the support from fellow Lumbee and other tribes across the state and nation. We all worked together in the support of UNITY and against division at NCAI

and we won the fight, but the battle will continue and we must always be ready.

Lastly, we learn about the partnership we have with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of N.C. and how they continue to support our tribal citizens in multiple ways. They are the true definition of a partner and I am glad to have their support.

John L. Lowery Chairman

Thank you to Our State Magazine for featuring our Lumbee Tribal Citizens Millard and Connie Locklear in the October issue. The story by Eric Ginsburg is called New Ground, Old Ways. Photos by Matt Ray Photography.
