The Lumbee Tribal Council Representatives and Mrs. Lakeisha Swett gathered together at 7 am to pack flyers to distribute at the National Congress of the American Indian Conference to encourage the members to defeat the proposed amendment. The flyer was coordinated by Tribal Chairman Lowery.
District 13 Representative Alex Baker and District 2 Representative Gerald Goolsby both addressed the assembly during the NCAI conference to speak out against the amendments to restrict state recognized tribes
“I have heard much today. And I hear my relatives plight. However, these amendments would abandon inherent sovereignty along with tribal identity to the federal government and do nothing to address their grievance. The Secretary’s list only came into existence in 1994 and was mandated by Congress to correct the BIA’s palling record of errors. This list should not serve to destroy NCAI’s integrity. This is a colonizer approach that Southeastern tribes know all too well. support unity not division - vote no!” Tribal Councilman Alex Baker.

“This brings to mind the old gospel song, “The tie that binds us”. Because the tie that binds us is not a list in Washington that a colonizer had prepared to say we are Native. It is the blood that runs through our veins that makes us Native,” Tribal Councilman Gerald Goolsby.
