Enjoy jazz at its best
IF the profile of the headline artists is anything to go by, then the 2013 Ribble Valley jazz Festival is set to be the biggest and best yet. Music fans should make a mark in the
diary for May 3rd to 6th - the May Day Bank Holiday weekend - as Clitheroe will play host to a diverse line-up of music that will appeal to more than just followers of jazz. Guests of international repute combine
with some of the most notable regional talent to create a fresh and eclectic programme. Acid jazz maestros the james Taylor
Quartet - fondly remembered for their Hammond organ-led rendition of the Starsky and Hutch theme tune - and British jazz Sitiger of the Year 2012 Liane Carroll share headline billing at The Grand. At the festival's intimate sister venue,
The Atrium (at Clitheroe Castle), special guests include band leader and raconteur Neil Yates, whose quartet will perform a retrospective on the material of Freddie Hubbard, klezmer outfit Tantz, the Matt Holborn Quartet and the highly regarded sextet The jazz Department. The festival's reputation for showcasing
Big Band music continues with Paul Rigby's Northern jazz Orchestra performing a swing set in the style of • Michael Buble. There will also be additional outdoor performances from St Augustine's RC and Clitheroe Royal Grammar School big bands. Participating pubs and restaurants will
also be hosting a selection of dinner jazz sessions and there will be a line-up of blues music at the Rose and Crown in Castle Street. Aspiring musicians will also have the
opportunity to learn from the masters by attending a series of workshops, including Paul Rigby (drums) and Trish Ferrarin (keyboards). "jazz comes in so many guises and
like everything else it modernises," says festival president Paul Rigby. "This year's festival programme
explores many different musical forms that fall under the jazz umbrella, like funk.
Organ maestro James Taylor leads his quartet in the finest Acid Jazz.
blues, gypsy swing. Big Band and Latin." The Ribble Valley jazz Festival
committee is also working in partnership with other groups to ensure the Bank , Holiday weekend event goes with a bang in areas other than just the music. A street closure on the Saturday will
allow for street performance, outdoor entertainment, a music stage and activities programmed by Valley Gigs, to attract visitors to the town. "It's about jazzing up the town for the
weekend in more ways than one" Paul says.
"Clitheroe is a popular destination and
it's important to bring things to life and celebrate all that we have to offer to keep visitors coming back." The brochure for the Fourth Ribble
Valley jazz Festival is out soon and tickets can be purchased for all shows at The Grand box office or by visiting the Grand website (
www.thegrandvenue.co.uk). This year the festival has introduced a
"Rover" ticket Enabling customers to attend each and every concert in the programme. These are available for £80 (£70 members), otherwise concert tickets for individual shows can be purchased separately. The full programme can be viewed in
www.rvjazzandblues.co.uk and tickets can be purchased online at The Grand's website (
www.thegrandvenue.co.uk), at wegottickets (
www.wegottickets.com) or by person or phone at the Grand Box Office, York Street, Clitheroe (01200 421599).
