.

I As a fatherof two small chil dren this a welcome attempt : to solve the problem of dog mess. However more s t i l l : : needs to be done because while the vast majority of dog : owners are conscientious ■ and clean up after their dogs, , unfortunately there is still a - minority who fail to do so and don’t care about the wellbeing ; of other residents and visitors to the town.

I l urge anybodywho witnesses < :

a dog owner failing to clean up after their dog to report them' - to the Borough Council. Surely : everybody can support the / : aim to make Clitheroe clean ' and clear from the scourge of ~ dog mess?

I’m puzzled by torn bottoms Has anyone been puzzled b y : . the fact that many of Ribble '■ ■ Valley Borough Council’s sacks for paper have holes in the : bottom? . ' * .

My last week’s sack, although ■;

looking new, had a huge hole - in the bottom, which needed repairing before putting in an ything, even an old Clitheroe - Advertiser! This week, I asked one of the ?.

ONLINEPORN .

We must wipe out child porn Calls for on-line child porn ■ sites to be blocked are long overdue and every pressure must be applied to Google and Microsoft until this happens.: But meanwhile I believe there '

is also a need for the sentenc- 4 ing o f those who access such: disgusting images to be tight- / enedup. Currently m a n y o f - : those caught having down- ■

loaded this filth do not even go tojail. 1 totally understand the ra- : tionale behind sending them on intensive sex rehabilitation courses, including the well- .: respected “Northumbria” ' course, as this can address the underlying problem and so . protect the community. But those for whom only :' prison is appropriate receive ‘ sentences frequently marked in months rather than years • ; thanks to sentencing guide- ■ lines handed down to judges j to follow. , This is no deterrent at all. Pae-.

dophiles, particularly t h o s e •' distributing images to other t perverts, need to know that : such behaviour will land them ' behind bars for a very long -

time for they are attacking the fabric of society. -

,We have a duty to protect our; children hnd every obscene ' image means thatachild^i somewhere in the world has ’ * been abused to meet the de

mand of deviants and their life ■ scarred forever. It is appalling

and must be stopped. - ' PaulNuttall

; UKIP North West MEP;

The last District Elections J werejust over two years ago. ;; it didn’t appear remarkable; ] then that a Conservative who /: won one of the two seats in the Littlemoor Ward where I live j in Clitheroe was from Read.' : But then we didn’t have the : dash for Housing on Green 4 Fields we have now. Conserva tives could win in many case s : regardless ofwho or where: from. Last October I involved my- :; self in the hope o f denying48 houses on the field behind us : that at the time had cattle on -: it. This Conservative didn’t ■ come to the Planning Commit tee whenasked by me (she did- send someone else) and when I checked she hadn’t and didn’t come to many Committee • Meetings anyway - in fact not ’ one Council Meeting. She has now not attended anything in . six months and has ceased t o : beacouncillor. : Just a few weeks ago at th e : = County Elections a Conserva tive took the Clitheroe Seat from the sitting Liberal Demo-. crat, but more to the point narrowly beat Steve Rush who4 surprisingly stood notas UKIP: as previously, but as an Inde-: ' pendent. The forthcoming by-election v in Littlemoor Ward should be extremely interesting. :■

Can the Conservatives find a ' , local candidate (and some- - ‘

one who will turn up) and will 'f Steve Rush continue as an In dependent?

Not forgetting the Liberal Democrats, whose sitting Lit-

tiemoor representative (who was and still is on Planning; ■ Committee) gave me sterling ‘ support and whose losing can- didate was and no doubt still

is a very worthy contender on planning and other is su e s .' - So watch this space.

Restoring the balance on

^^alley Hydro ’Two recentletters have sought:

to undermine our Whalley ■ ' Hydro Scheme before the fund raising for it starts. : . ; " : ' ■

Both seek to make a compari- ‘

son with another scheme at ‘ ' Settle.

All hydro schemes are unique- i ly shaped by the river on , ‘

-which they are si ted and our^ | scheme differs from that at ‘ : 4 .

Settle in several key respects; ^

: Probably the mostsignificaiii4 ; feature is that we are right'-4- • at the bottom o f the Calder s " :

catchment(3iGsqkm)and have data on river flows from' 4

an official Environment Agem I cy monitoring station going : : :

backover4oyears.Usingthis 4 ; and other data we commis-

sioned a major design study ■ with funding of £20,400 from i-

the Department of Energy and i Climate Change.:

The company that we commis- ? sioned to do the study was suf- V; ficiently impressed that it is : prepared to give us aperform- ance guarantee on which our 4 business plan is based. The scheme’s official prospec-' |

:tus will be issued later this ■ : / year and should contain a l l : f.: the information people needif; they are to make a considered ■ investment decision. n - We are reluctant to enterinto: ^ a debate via your letters col-.' umn, but felt it important to - challenge statements that are I clearly mischievous and mis- -i leading. Muchofthefishing lobby has one (seldom declared) aim,

;

which is to tear do wn all weirs . including the historic one a t ; ; ; Whalley that has been there ' since aboutisBo. Most local :; j people, I suspect, would object ; strongly i f this were to hap pen. The weir is important as part ofthe historic built : • landscape ofWhalley and also j serves to aerate the water of the Calder. It acts as a barrier i? to the upstream migration of salmonoid fish in certain river conditions. For this reason •: ■ .: one would have expected that, ; anglers would warmly wel- ■ ; come the fish ladder, which is, an integral part o f our scheme, . since this will alio w fish to pass at almost any time.

,

Our proposed Archimedean; ,; ; screw turbine is officially rec-; ognised as being fish friendly despite some shroud-waving d stories to the contrary. The ' Environment Agency, which regulates the use ofthe river, v, has been extremely demand- ing in ensuring that our
