AN astonishing 40-year spell as the . conductor of Slaidburn Silver Band was just cause for celebration for John Cowking and friends with a special concert at Newton Village Hall on Sunday. After taking up his trusty baton at the


tender age of 16, john has enjoyed every minute of his music making with what's known as the "happy band", due to their obvious thorough enjoyment of every performance. Fans, friends and family gathered to mark


the auspicious occasion, with the band playing favourite pieces from throughout

world-famous signature march "Slaidburn", composed especially for the band and named after the village.
