R IBBLE Valley MEP Chris Davies is calling for all Euro-MPs to face an expenses freeze until 2014. The Liberal Democrat, whose North West

<

constituency includes Ribble Valley, wants. the European Parliament to reject an infla tion-linked increase in its administration costs, and says that MEPs should accept cuts in the value o f their expenses budget. “T o anyone who has served on a local coun

cil, or run their own business, it is stark star- ingly obvious that the European Parliament could achieve big savings in its budget without affecting its worlq” said M r Davies. - H e claims that a huge saving o f up to

£200m. a year could be achieved by ending the rotation o f the Parliament between sepa rate buildings in Brussels and Strasbourg. “ I have no doubt that most MEPs want to

H-

put an end to the ‘travelling circus’ arrange ments, but the decision rests not with the Eu ropean Parliament but with national parlia ments. Change may be blocked by France, but until the issue is put on the agenda the argu ments will never be nronerlv heard.”
