ALMOST two years ago Sgt Rick Clements was lying in a hospital bed fighting for his life. The brave soldier is now preparing to leap

from a plane and head to shark infested seas in an ambitious £100,000 bid to thank those who have helped him.

Sgt Clements, who from Chatburn, suffered

horrific injuries in a bomb blast in Afghanistan in 2010. The 32-year-old former pupil of Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, who served in the 1 st Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, lost both his legs and was left fighting for his life after stepping on a concealed landmine while leading a foot patrol in Helmand Province. He spent months in hospital and underwent rehab before he could return home.

, The local hero made a remarkable recoveiy',

and married his fiancee Leanne Isaacs in an emotional wedding ceremony in June last year. Re-living his war ordeal, he said: "It was a

miracle I even survived, or rather a credit to all the medics from on the ground, the ones on the helicopter that picked me up and those back at camp Bastion. "Once I awoke three weeks later in hospital, I

found out that I had lost both my legs suffering extremely high amputations and that my genitals had also been severely damaged. I got through these dark times with the support of my family and in particular my then girlfriend, Leanne, who has stood by me through it all. Over the next few months I gradually became - stronger and better able to do things so I was moved to the rehabilitation unit in Headley Court. They started to build up my strength and look at the use of prosthetic limbs. After a year of trying I decided that it was not possible for me to use prosthetics because of how high my amputations were. I had, however, achieved many things such as being back driving, swimming and gaining a lot of independence. Our wedding day was almost a year to the day after the bomb, which was the most amazing day of my life." Sgt Clements now wants to repay those who helped get him there.

, Over the next 12 months Sgt Clements, who

now lives in Blackpool, hopes to raise £100,000 with a series of charity events, and he's set up his own website in a bid to get the donations rolling in. One of the planned events is a cage dive with a great white shark in Australia. ■ He said: "I definitely feel lucky to be alive, the '

medics said that five years ago they wouldn't have had the means' to keep me here. "I want to raise money for some of the charities

which have helped me and my family over the past 18 months. "I'm planning a skydive with some of the staff

from the Blackpool BLESMA (British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association) home and I want to go to Australia and cage dive with a great white shark." The local BLESMA home allowed Sgt Clements, who also suffered serious internal, injuries, to stay with them while his home was " ' adapted and BLESMA is one of the charities he is fund-raising for. He also wants to raise cash for SSAFA ■

the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association), which provides.accommodation for soldiers and their families close to rehab centres. Help for Heroes and the Army Benevolent Fund. Sgt Clements added:."Tm in the process of

organising a black tie dinner night with an auction at Weeton Barracks. My regiment, the ' Duke of Lancasteris, is based there and they are quite keen to help out. "I just thought I had to do something, I've set

a target for the end of the 12 months to raise £100,000, which might be a little bit optimistic

but I'm confident we can do that." According to Sgt Clements' website, he has

so far managed to raise £3,825, but has lots of fund-raising events planned to reach his target. He added: "Please support our cause if you can because I can personally guarantee that your money will make a huge difference to those guys injured on operations or during war fighting for our beloved country."
