which form a centrepiece for the pretty village of Waddington, stand in a large quadrangle and have been home to a close knit community of women from the surrounding parishes of Mitton, Grindleton, Waddington, Bolton by Bowland, Slaidbum, Gisburn, Whitewell and Tosside since its construction in the 17th Century. The term "hospital" is slightly
misleading, but vras derived from the word "hospitality", the spirit which the trustees strive to ' maintain even today. The Almshouses were originally
constructed during the Stuart restoration period by the founder Robert Parker of Carlton and Marley, vyhose family had been landowners in Yorkshire and Lancashire from the time of
Henry VI. Mr Parker, bom in June 1633, was the second son of Edward Parker of Browsholme Hall. His uncles Samuel and Peter Sunderland (his mother's brothers) were both great benefactors to Yorkshire schools and churches and in founding the hospital, Robert Parker was keen to follow on this family tradition. Through the years, the Parker
family have continued to take a keen interest in the hospital, with the head of the family being hereditary chairman of the trustees. Originally built to house just 10 widows, in 1990, - the buildings were entirely reconstructed to accommodate 24 separate cottages, a house for the warden, chapel, offices and communal room. Today, the cottages offer
incumbent residents a compact and comfortable home for ladies for as long as they can look after themselves, with a little extra help from neighbours and the warden. Surrounded by their own furniture

and belongings, they can live out a peaceful and happy old age in the comfort arid security of their own special community. Lesley Heywood, Hospital
Warden explains; "The essence of the Almshouses is that we provide independent living in a supported environment for ladies aged 65 and over. We have some great regular activities, including bingo, social evenings and regular games nights. There is a subsidised rent and the residents also pay a weekly maintenance contribution. As warden, my main duties are to act as a good neighbour and to look after the buildings and in an emergency, I contact relatives and ring for the doctor or any other professional help that may be necessary. Aside from this help, the ladies’ live really independently, doing their own shopping, picking U R presCTiptions and helping each other with every day tasks, supplemented by help from family members and friends, social services and other agencies." Residents of this very special
and unique community recently celebrated the Christian festival of Candlemas, staying true to their Church of England roots with a tea party and the local clergy and trustees in attendance. Lesley continues: "The party
was a great example of a social occasion enjoyed by the ladies here. We relish the opportunity to get together regularly and events like this embody the spirit of our community as a whole." • For more information on
