Little Voice on stage makes a big impact

, shy electrician, who falls for ^ Little Voice. Sally Bankes is a moving

and subtle Sadie, the fat friend of Marie and LV; Adam Keast and Louis Querelle provide the restof the music under ' - the direction of Howard ' Gray. The play is comic, • poignant and dramatic. Qaran Bagnall's set design and Chris Hirst's lighting add to the succea of this production. I was interested to read the programme notes to find out how many of the great singers Little Voice adores also have . tragic histories. This is well worth seeing

and the night I was there, the audience gave the cast a standing ovation. ^ The Octagon returns

Q&A

Here you can send in and find out the answers to those gardening problems

Why are the leaves on my plant all distorted and crinkled? t , “

The cause of this will have been ' a type of aphid (insect). Having landed on the leaf when young,-, they pierce arid suck,'creating a distortion to the leaf-To get rid of them spray with-a systemic insecticide, being ^temic is : crucial becauseithis means the plant will take it into the sap system so any further, sucking insects will be killed.

in your garden

IT'S important in the garden not just to have it looking great, but to help create a habitat for wildiife, and most importantly, the bees! The best way to turn your garden into a bee-

friendly place is with your plant choices. When choosing plants a good start is opting for those with a scent, and it need not be strong, the best example being Buddleja. Nowadays the beauty with growing these is that you do not need to have a giant 10ft tall bush at the bottom of the garden. The new "Buzz" range, with a maximum height

of only two feet, is ideal for the front of the border or as a container grown plant, still providing masses of scented flowers throughout summer. Now more towards the perennial plants, Nepetas (Catmints) are great edging plants with their long spikes of lavender flowers; the Sedums (Ice Plants) are great for late displays of flower and novy come with interesting foliage colours. A very under-rated plant is the Achillea (Yarrow),

now in a range of colours but more importantly giving long-lasting interest for up to eight weeks throughout summer the/re definitely good value. Another long lasting perennial which the bees go mad for is Monardas (Bergamots), flowering in August with whorls of irresistible flowers for the.

bees in red, pink, purple and white. Remember to site your plants in a sunny border out of the wind. Looking towards next Spring, to realiy encourage

bees, have a go at making a bee hotel! Firstly make a wooden frame out of four-inch (10cm) plank and approximately eight inches (20cm) square, then in the gap pack lots of dead hollow stems

Jobs to do...

1 - standard Suckers Look out for suckers growing

at the base of any plants which are grown on standards (stems). Remove these by cutting back close to the stem of the plant • making sure not to leave a stump where new buds could emerge from.

2 -Lower Lawn Cut Height Now you can lower the height

of the cut on your lawn mower, with this warm wet weather this

will also help slightly reduce the growth rate of your grass.

3 - Spray Roses Spray roses with a systemic

fungicide to help prevent mildews, blackspots and rusts on established bushes. Try to get the spray on before the first signs develop, to help increase the plants resistance.

4 - Support Delphiniums Now producing many buds

tie in and support these to stop them breaking and help create that show stopping display over the next few weeks. With the rain and wind, this is when they are most susceptible to damage.

5 - Divide primroses HAVING finished flowering, divide and replant putting a handful of new soil in the ground as they thrive on fresh bacteria. This gives strong new plants with plenty of bloom next year.
