Rock band snaking up the ladder
BLACKMAMBA, a local rock band based at Stony- hurst, has made it through to the next stage o f the prestigious “Live and Unsigned” competition. Auditions for the competition were held this
week at the Palace Hotel in Manchester, where Blackmamba impressed judges with their original ity and musical style. They will now go on to play at
the regional finals, to be held at the Royal Northern College of Music, also in Manchester, on Saturday April 14th. BlackMamba have recently released an EP with

Alert over PPI fraudsters
RESIDENTS in Clitheroe are be ing warned to be on their guard against fraudsters claiming to be able to recover cash spent on pay ment protection insurance (PPI). A number of reports have been
made to Lancashire Constabu lary over the past few weeks from people who have been conned out of money by cold callers contact- ing_them by phone or e-mail and claiming to work for financial re covery teams. In one case a man handed over
several thousand pounds after being told he stood to get back PPI over payments worth around £40,000. Det Con. Tony McClements,
fraud evaluation and liaison of ficer, said: “The whole issue of PPI recovery is extremely tooical at
this time; a situation compounded by a recession where people are struggling to make ends meet.' “Near cast-iron guarantees are
given by the fraudsters that they will recover your PPI payments, subject to an advance fee payable by you. “ In turn this leads to further
payments before the victim real ises they have been hoodwinked.” ■ “Many o f the fraudsters are ac tually operating from outside the country - using UK telephone numbers diverted to their true location and professional look ing websites to appear legitimate - and this can make it difficult to find offenders and bring them to justice. “ It is also difficult to close sites down, oarticularlv if thev are host
ed abroad, and they quickly reap pear elsewhere. “The best way to tackle this is
to advise people on how they can- avoid becoming a yictim in the first place. Our advice is to never do business with a cold caller un less you have checked them out thoroughly. “By typing the company name
or telephone number into search engines, you will often find other consumers highlighting potential fraudsters. “Other danger signs include
requests for payments via money seiyice bureaus. I ’d also ask that friends and relatives o f those who may be \mlnerable are alert to the problems so that they can warn their loved ones to this developing issue.”
