A WELL-RESPECTED and popular Waddington character Thelma Hart ley died this week after a short illness
aged 73. Thelma had lived in the village since her
mother, Mrs Ella Raby, became the licen see of the Higher Buck Inn in 1961. Thelma worked alongside her mother in the pub until Mrs Rab/s retirement in
1979. Bom in Blackburn, Thelma worked for
most of her life within the licensed trade, with stints at several pubs in Blackburn, followed by spells at the Golden Ball, Pill ing, and the (Topy Nook Hotel, Bolton-by- Bowland. In the latter stages of her life, she spent treasured time with her great friend and companion Phil Knight. Her good friend Susan Boothman said:
“Thelma was a real character, known by many of the villagers of Waddington from both her time in the pub and for playing a big part in village life over many years. She will be very sadly missed.”
