‘iF’f i ii * M. ir> ill Allan Vincent, of Hot Coffee Photography
What qualifications do you need? You don’t really rieed any qualifications. What’s more important is you have great people skills, quick reactions, a great eye for composition and the ability to manipulate the light that is available.
f i p r i t k
m I
. Any other requirements? You need to be able to put people at ease and make them.feel like a million dollars. Ypu also need to be able to rriarehal people without being ' bossy. You don’t want to miss an opportunity, orfme and you need to
■ be able to compose a shot. You don’t want photographs to have plants in inappropriate places, people not looking the right way or something that shouldn’t be in the background. You need photo editing skills and to be able to design an album to make the photos lookthe best.
How long does it take to qualify for the role? It’s a hard learning curve but
I would suggest to anyone they practice with portraits, parties and landscapes^
. Once you can capture the mood and lighting, it’s a case of putting all three elements together and testing your skills in one shot. If you can, assist another wedding photographer to pick up tips and build up a portfolio, and try out on friends and family.
What sort of stating salary and package can you expect? It depends how you value your skills or where you put yourself in the marketplace. I would suggest you price yourself mid market and charge around £1,500 to shoot a wedding. You need to establish yourself and you can’t beat reputation and word of mouth.
What sort of career prospects and structure is there? Someone once said, if you shoot eight weddings one year, you will shoot 16 weddings the next year and so on. If you can get up to a 50
wedding a year business, you should ■ have the revenue turnover of £100k+. Then it depends how big you wantto.go. What sort of personal sMIls make someone best suited? You need to . have patience, be friendly, calm and on ■ your game from the minute you start. They can be long days and you need to be able to perform all day.
What kind of Job satisfaction can . you expect from a career? It’s the best feeling in the world, when you show the bride who hates having her photograph taken and she looks absolutely stunning. To be given that trust and deliver that kind of emotion when people see the final images is phenomenal.
In 50 words sell your profession. If you love people and are able to cope with hundreds of different situations in one
■ day and have an absolute pride in what you do, wedding photography is for you. ADVICE: Allan captures people’s big days
