A NEW book entitled "Umekilns and Limebuming Around the Valleys of Hodder and Loud" is available now.
" Written by Helen Wallbank and her
nnothef Frances Marginson for Slaidbum Village Archive, tfie book's aim is to record the ewdence that remains of limekilns and
limebuiTiing within the local area. It follows a tWo-year project to locate and
record the linniekilns throughout 15 parishes and covers nearly 200 sites.
The projert was funded by the Heritage
Lottery and co-ordinated by Sandra Silk of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), details of which are on their website. This four-part project comprised the
limekilns in Bowland, ancient archaeology around Pendle and cheese making and the chair industry, both around Chipping. _ As the authors explain in the book's introducbon, all the sites were redundant.

complete record was deposited with the Slaidbum Village Archive and a copy was sent to Peter lies, specialist advisor (archaeology) at Preston to update the Historic Environment Record (HER). An additional and unexpected part of the research was the first discovery of even older limekilns in the area, namely clamp kilns,, and the authors expect more of these to be identified as time progresses. The first one found was partially excavated
and the results are documenteci within the book.
The use of marl from marl pits for land
improvement was formerly widespread in parts of the area and this is also included. It was the source of lime for many farmers of past centuries, although they vvere probably unaware that lime was the reason it was beneficial.
Countless hours were spent at the • .
Lancashire Archives searching for surviving documentary evidence. Some was found; mostly for commercial and estate kilns. Much more remains elusive; perhaps it was never even recorded. Umebuming is.an almost forgotten industry and this book details its story within our area. The book is available frorri Slaidbum
Village Archive, The Heritage Centre, - 25 Church Street, Slaidbum, Central Stores and Riverbank Tearooms, both in Slaidbum. Puddleducks at Dunsop Bridge and Clitheroe Library also have copies. The
book is priced £8 plus £2'for package and posting.
