GUEST speaker at Clitheroe University O f The Third A g e (U3A) meeting was Andy Shackleton, liaison officer for SELRAP (Skipton-East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership), assisted by media officer Jane Wood, who read out a message o f support from the U3A chairman Colin Armstrong. This voluntary group is campaigning to
reinstate the missing 11.5-mile rail link between Skipton and Colne. The speakers explained how the
campaign base has grown. It has the cross-party support o f 343
councils across the North of England, including Lancashire and Yorkshire County Councils, and more than 1,400 members and affiliated groups. There have also been 163 members o f
Parliament, 94 peers and 44 members o f the European Parliament pledging their support, as have 140 businesses. Others backing the campaign include
members o f the rail industry, the Archbishop o f York, Dr John Sentamu, television and radio presenter Dame Joan Bakewell, together with Julia Bradbury from BBC’s Countryfile and Railway Walks programmes. Andy and Jane spoke about the contrast
between the well-used Aire Valley Line from Skipton to Bradford/Leeds, which provides a 21st century rail service, and the line from Colne to Preston, that needs to be upgraded from a single to a double track, and also requires electrification. The reinstatement o f the Colne-Skipton
