CITROEN’S classy, glassy 7-seater Grand C4 Picasso brought a new level of sophis tication to the mini-MPV market at its launch in 2007 - and still does. Today’s improved version features sharper design, extra equipment and more efficient e-HDi diesel engines. For growing families, this avant garde people carrier continues to

first time may leave you a little taken aback. The glass area would do justice to a modest green house. The panoramic windscreen arcs over head and after just a short interruption for the panel holding the extendable sun visors there’s this optional full length sunroof that extends all the way back to the third row of seats. Wish bone-shaped windscreen pillars have glazed centre sections to further boost visibility and the sun visors can slide forward when needed to shield the eyes of front seat occupants on sunny days. Factor in the low window line and Citroen have created the lightest and airiest of interiors for the growing family where all seven occupants get an unhindered view out. There’s space aplenty up front and excellent

combine style and substance like little else. Climbing aboard the Grand C4 Picasso for the

headroom everywhere. The facia has a typically quirky Citroen flavour with this stubby high- mounted gearlever for the six-speed gearbox, a centrally-located instrument display (which, incidentally, can be illuminated in five differ ent colours) and separate control panels for

the heating and air conditioning at either end. If you’ve been used to a more conventional lay out, it will take a little getting used to. The driv ing position is high but benefits from a tilt and reach-adjustable steering wheel and well-spaced pedals, which makes it easy to get comfortable. And although the seats look quite thin, they’re well proportioned and supportive on long trips. With a choice of a 120bhp VTi or 155bhp THP

dynamic rivals, it still turns into corners with confidence, and despite more body movement, always remains composed. The ride is also ac complished - it soaks up bumps with ease and is supple enough to isolate imperfections from the cabin. The 1.6-litre HDi diesel under this version’s bonnet is likely to remain the biggest seller, and boasts smooth power delivery, fine mechanical refinement - especially at motorway speeds - and enough pace for most situations. If you want an easier drive still, there’s Citroen’s EGS semi-auto, complete with steering wheel paddle shifters, which is standard on higher-spec diesels. It has a slightly jerky shift in auto mode, but is smoother if you use the paddles and suits the relaxed nature of the vehicle. Most people I’ve spoken to reckon the C4 Pi-

1.6-litre petrol engines or llObhp 1.6 or 150 or 160bhp 2.0-litre HDi diesel units, C4 Grand Pi casso drivers won’t be wanting for decent pow- erplants. There are few thrills to be had, but the Grand C4 Picasso is safe and reassuring on the road. While lacking the sharpness and feel of more

casso is one of the best looking MPVs on sale and the styling tweaks on the latest models are unlikely to change that view. They’re rela tively minor but comprise LED daytime run ning lights, a revised front bumper, redesigned tail lamp clusters and more prominent double chevron badges on the front grille and tailgate. There are seven seats in all ‘Grand’ models and, unusually in this class of vehicle, there’s space for a couple of soft bags in the boot with all the seats in place and stowage can be augmented by all those useful cubbies.

and attention to detail ensure that the Grand C4 Picasso is a vehicle that people can form an emotional attachment to, just like the best Cit- roens of the past.

BUILT in Britain and launched in 2006, the eighth generation Civic per formed something of a minor mira cle for Honda, emphatically putting to rest the notion that the company’s venerable family hatch was aimed at

still entertain if the mood strikes. Aesthet ics apart, this Si model doesn’t really have any sporting pretensions yet feels agile and grips extremely well. And although the steering doesn’t feed back much infor mation from the road surface, it’s at least quick and direct and the car feels corre spondingly responsive and light on its feet. If the Civic shows'its age anywhere it’s be cause it can’t match current class standards for ride comfort or road noise. It doesn’t do badly in these areas but newer rivals have moved things on.

and diesel models, if you want your Civic with some vim you’ll need the 139bhp l.S- litre petrol engine fitted to this Si model, for which Honda claims a 0-62raph time of 8.9 seconds and a 127mph top speed. These aren’t exceptional figures in this class these days but, subjectively, the engine is smooth and eager to rev and, on part throttle at least, impressively refined. In fact, at idle, it’s almost silent. Use all of the perform ance and it does get a bit vocal but sounds sporty rather than harsh. For this 1.8 the optional transmission is a conventional 5- speed auto ‘box but, personally. I’d stick with the sweet-shifting manual which gives the car a livelier feel and saves on fuel and emissions into the bargain. On a fivisty country road, the Civic can

the near-perfect weighting and smooth ness of the brake and clutch pedalsand the lovely, snickety precision of the six-speed gearbox make it satisfying. But although it quickly becomes obvious the Civic is an easy car to drive, it isn’t such an easy one to see out of. If these windscreen pillars were much thicker they’d be a real problem and the integrated tailgate spoiler that bisects the rear screen promotes an uneasy feel ing that you can never quite make out the type of car in the rear view mirror. Honda needs to have addressed these issues in the next Civic. With the discontinuation of the Type-R

up-market with better qualify trim. But, from behind the wheel, the view is no less extraordinary than it was five years ago. This side of a Lexus LFA’s or a motor show concept car’s, there isn’t a dashboard lay out 1 can think of that looks more wilfully futuristic with its dual-plane architecture, mixture of analogue and digital (indeed, contrasting styles of digital) instrumen tation and, to say the least, idiosyncratic switchgear layout. But it is very driver-fo cused, clustering all the controls around the steering wheel, so that all there is for the front seat passenger to look at is this conventional, if none too roomy, glovebox. The Civic’s signature drilled metal pedals deserve a mention, too. First, for being over the top. jAnd second, for being exactly in the right place And the Civic is still fun to drive. Just
