Jerusalem artichokes, sheep’s milk curds, calamint, and Howbarrow shoots was followed by Dublin Bay prawns, red Russian kale, lady’s smock, and candy beet root. Next a delicious skate belly with cockles, purple azure kohlrabi baked in salt, coastal herbs, parsley and ci der vinegar. Fresh slant on a classic
REVIEW: “Romeo And Juliet” at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton, until March 5th. Box office: 01204521)407. Website: www.oc-
tagonbolton.co.uk
SHAKESPEARE’S Romeo and Juliet is so well known it is hard to think of fresh approaches. David Thacker’s production at Bolton’s Octa
gon Theatre is in modern dress in a contempo rary setting. It works well, helped considerably by hvo spirited performances by Jade Anouka as Juliet and David Ricardo-Pearce as Romeo.
They manage to convey a youthful enthusi
asm, naivety and passion that are moving. The interpretation seems to heighten the cruelty of the machismo fighting between the rival gangs of Capulet and Montague and makes the drama more accessible and relevant to a younger audi ence. Michelle Collins is first a comic and then an
anguished nurse and nine accomplished actors play the rest of the roles. The stage setting, designed by Ruari Mur chison, is bare and the whole has a pared down
intensity that gives some new insights. I partic ularly enjoyed Carol Sloman’s music, with the' use of Rodrigo’s Concierto De Aranjuez, one of my favourite pieces of music, written after the death of a child.
This production should bring new audiences
to a greater awareness of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. - .
The Octagon’s next production is by another
famous playwright, Arthur Miller, “The Price”, which starts on March 10th.
