heartbreak for Dog

Football

Duke of Wellington . . .2 Dog Inn ....................... 1 FOR the second game in succession. Dog were on the receiving end of last-minute heartbreak. Two weeks ago, the Whalley side

had snatched defeat from the jaws of ■victory in a penalty shoot-out defeat against Ossy Refugees in the Terry Cattermole Trophy. This time, they saw their Great

Harwood opponents secure a barely- deserved ■win -with a last-minute shot on the break. • Dog had made the brighter start

in this Harry Dewhurst Memorial League First Di'vision encounter, but found themselves a goal down mid way through the first half. By this time, they had already

lost club captain Liam Hill-Parker and missed a few promising chances. Dog started the second half very

brightly, but missed a penalty in the opening minutes before squandering further clear-cut opportunities. However, they finally levelled

after 76 minutes when Mark Lord fo'und the net from close range. Then, with Dog looking the likeli

er winners, Wellington found their winner. Central defender Toby Barker was

named man-of-the-match after another outstanding performance. Manager Simon Kerins was disap

pointed at the result, but delighted with the attitude and effort of his team. He said: “We can play much bet

ter than that, but that was a very solid team performance.” Dog face title-chasing Spinning Jenny at Wilson’s on Sunday.

utes for the hosts to break the deadlock when a long ball downfield from Kershaw was mis judged by a Stackstead centre half who headed the ball into the path of Oli McLean who struck into the bottom corner on the volley from 20 yards out. The home side’s pass

ing early on was below par but they still man aged to create good open ings.

However, their efforts

were thwarted thanks to some excellent goalkeep ing and poor finishing. Michael Walsh tried

his luck from range and was unlucky to witness his dipping, curling effort cannon ,back off the crossbar. ^ Lloyd and McLean

should then have added to the scoreline to take the game away from the visitors, before the latter missed another glaring chance when a flowing move down the left resulted in O’Neill squar ing the ball to him only for him to slice wide of the target. After the interval

Stacksteads started to mount some pressure on the Rimington back four in a bid to find the lev eller. Kershaw was called upon on several occa sions. An incredible reflex

save from the stopper rebounded to a forward jiKt eight yards out, but his goalbound effort was superbly blocked on the line by; veteran Paul ■Keighley. .

The visitors equalised courtesy of a thunderous header from a comer late on but even then Riming ton had chances to snatch ■victory. , An O’Neill strike
