Each had shown an excel-

: lent quality of care, support and education to meet the needs of the children, young people and adult learners. She said: “I wholehearted

ly congratulate these providers on their success and hard work in delivering such high standards. Excellence does not happen by chance, these providers have a real drive to inspire, challenge, and support children, young

people and adult learners. But there is no reason why everyone can’t be outstand ing, I hope they will be a source of inspiration to oth ers.” . ■ Rowland headteacher Mr

Cox said: “This celebration of success recognises the extraordinary work col leagues in our three schools have done to secure the best po^ible standards of educa tion and care for the young people in the Ribble Valley. “Their dedication and

commitment has enabled our schools to be amongst the

very best in the country and it is absolutely proper that we celebrate this achievement All of us were vey proud to receive this accolade from Her Majesty’s Chief Inspec tor.” . - All schools which appear on

RATS to revisit old friend

THE Ribchester RATS are revisiting an old friend later this month. Thirty-eight years after it

first performed Sandy Wil son's musical play “The Boy Friend”, the company have decided to revisit the show it last put on in 1972. • Set in the 1920s, the musical comedy was first performed in 1953 and was famously made into a film by Ken Russell starring 'Twiggy. A gentle send up of flapper

musicals, the plot is set at Madame Dubonnet’s finishing , school for refined young ladies in Nice and follows the classic “boy meets girl, boy loses girl, bpy rediscovers girl and all live happily ever after” storylina : For the RATS' production Polly Browne is being played by Laura Frost, who is well known to Ribchester audi ences for, her many perform ances over. several years, ■

with the development of new garages a t the site in Ribchester Road. A report to the committee

noted th a t in terms of its d^ign, highway safety and impact on residential ameni ty the scheme provided no “significant detriment”. But because it “did not

seek” to provide any afford able housing, the planning officer said “it should, for this reason, be resisted” and recommended refusal. Committee members

agreed with the recommen dation

And plans to demolish a

former Whalley nursery and build a three-storey retail and office development in its place have also been refused. An application for 7

Accrington Road, Whalley, was turned down by mem bers of the same committee. A report to councillors

said the proposal was seek ing Conservation Area Con sent and full planning per mission to provide the devel opment, with car parking, on the site of the nursery which closed in 2005/6.

However, the planning

officer recommended that the scheme be refused as the development would be “detrimental to the charac ter and appearance of Whal ley Conservation Area because of the incongruous design of its shop front, the incorporation of modem and poor quality materials, and the absence of robust detail ing”. The officer also recom mended that conservation area consent be refused. Committee members

agreed with the recommen dations.
