BANK. H oliday Monday turned into a nightmare for an elderly couple when their car was involved in a collision with

a bus near Gisburn. Tlie accident happened shortly

before 3 p.m. on Monday on the busy A59 near the entrance to GLsburn Business Park, just out

side Gisburn on the Clitheroe side. A silver Toyota Corolla was

being driven towards Clilheroe when itwas involved in the head- on smash with a Ribble Valley Express bus travelling towards' Skipton.

The car sustained heavy front-

end damage, but its airbags de ployed and the 69-year-old driver and 62-year-old front seat passen

ger, from Bury, suffered relatively minor chest, leg and whiplash- type injuries. Fire and Rescue crews from

Clithcroe, Barnoldswick and Ear- by rushed to the scene, together with police and paramedics. The North West Air Ambulance land ed in a field next to the road, later

joined by the Yorkshire Air Am bulance.

As a precautionary measure,

and before the extent of the cou ple’s injuries was known, rescue crews cut the roof and doors from

: the car to safely remove the casu alties, who remained conscious throughout. They'were flown in the two air ambulances to the Royal Blackburn Hospital, where ' they were detained overnight for treatment and observation.

The bus suffered significant

damage to its nearside front, but its driver and three passengers were not injured. However, the road remained

closed in both directions for sever al hours for accident investigation and removal of the vehicles, with traffic diverted along the narrow country roads through Bolton-by- Bowland and Rimington. A spokesman for Lancashire

Fire and Rescue Service said the couple would undoubtedly have suffered much worse and possibly fatal injuries had it not been for wearing their seatbelts and the car’s airbags.

Employees at Gisburn Business

Park brought out cups of tea for the emergency services personnel during the operation.
