LIFT-OFF: Pupils at Oakhill College who designed the rockets, (s)

HIGH-FLYING pupils at Oakhill College have been putting their science skills to good use. As part of science week,

Miss Stagg, a teacher at the Wlialley-based college, or-

j ganised a contest between Years 7 and 8 pupils in Mar tyrs and Scholars houses. There was fierce compe

tition as the rockets were assessed on design, dis tance and accuracy of flight.

All about chemistry

THE fun of chemistry is set to be enjoyed by four lucky pupils from St Augustine’s RC High School. For the third year run

ning pupils at the Billing- ton-based school have won places on “Salters Chemis try Camps”.

Alively talkon India trip

AN EXCHANGE to a school in India was the theme of a talk given to Clitheroe and District

■ Probus Club by visiting speaker Martin Wrigley. A teacher from a school in Poulton, he delivered

:an illustrated talk about his visit to the:in Ghaz- ipur, north eastern India. Although it had been

. anticipated that food would be a problem, Mr Wrigley said little illness occurred with very fresh meat on occasion - from

-live goat in the living room to tasty stew in little more than the cooking time. The architectural beau

ty of temples was vividly projected, culminating in the dazzling Taj Mahal. 'At the exchange school,

the most noticeable dif ference was the lack of practical illustration. When Mr. Wrigley illus trated the result of apply ing a force to an object by

' kicking a football against ' a wall, the children were amazed a teacher would do anything like that.

, ’ ..'The vote of thanks was ' ’•'given bjf Brian Wallace.^ : • • • Glitheroe'and Dis- •'■

On the trail of wooden artwork

CURATOR Mark Ma-

. son is on the tra il of . - mushrooms and hedge hogs from the Ribble Valley sculpture trail.: “Art &■ Us” is the title

:, of the summer family ex hibition, which will cele brate the history, art and community involvement in the trail. The Brungerley Park

trail now features more than 20 pieces of pub lic art by leading artists and sculptors, includ ing Thompson Dagnall,

■ Halima C as sell and Clare Bigger. •It opened in 1993 with

a collection of carved wooden pieces, some of which were produced by local schoolchildren at

- wood carving workshops held in the old railway station, prior to its trans-

. formation into The Plat form Gallery.; The o rg a n is e r s of

the exhibition, which will run from July 24th until October 10th at the S tew a rd ’s Gal-

^lery at Clitheroe Cas tle, are now searching for some very special items.

■ Mark Mason, cura tor of “Art & Us”, said: “During Thompson Dag- nall’s artist’s residency in 1993 at the, railway

■ station, dozens of local schoolchildren carved wooden mu sh ro oms which were taken to the

.park and planted dur ing a special ‘mushroom planting day’. “Other children from

Whalley Primary School carved a series of hedge hogs which were, pre sented to all the schools and community groups who had been involved. “All the mushrooms

which were p lan ted at the park have sadly gone, but we’re hop ing th a t someone may have kept theirs, or that there is a lonely wooden hedgehog sat in a school cupboard, who’d like to be re-acquainted with his friends.” He added: “We’d love

to include pieces created by schools and commu nity groups from, 1993, in addition to the beau- : tiful models and design

work produced,by the trail artists. ; “ Anyone w h d .?can

track down a mushroom or hedgehog: from the 1993 workshops will re ceive an invitation to a

. private viewing of the ..exhibition, where they -will see their carving on display.”' ; 6 Please contact Mark Mason at the Platform

. Gallery before July 5th by telephone on 01200
