hard for our livings and resent it terribly when the public sector wastes our tax payments - even when the sums are rela tively small. The staff of Ribble Valley Borough
Council have been led, for the past decade or more, by a genial-old cove called Dave Morris. Apart from' the fact that he supports Manchester United, he is a decent sort of a man. He is an active member of his church and his greatest delight is in taking his grandchildren away for short trips. He really is a kindly man. No one would describe Dave as espe
cially dynamic and, in a sense, a dynam ic man is the last thing the Ribble Valley wants or needs.: We are a conservative lot and the gen-

tier the pace of change, the better we seem to like it. Dave is going to retire in April and it is overwhelmingly likely that
-he will be replaced by one of his subordi nates who will spend the last few years of his own career, revelling in the title of Chief Executive of the Borough Council. I actually prefer the old title of Town Clerk. To my mind, it better reflects the nature of the job. There are two reasons to think that an
internal promotion is the likeliest out come of the current recruitment-process. The first is that our councillors, like us.

THE committee of Clitheroe’s Good Samaritan Society decided to solicit subscriptions to enable them to carry on
: their work. The committee made the public appeal in th e hope th a t the

help.them meet the demands made on them. The society had been in existence for 35 years and its sole purpose was to help the helpless. • A special meeting of the 'Town Council was arranged to discuss the pro-
.-visions of the Children’s Bill relating to the feeding of school children. As a
■ result of the depression in trade, many children were going
to.school without breakfast. Efforts were
to.be-made to
;help the proud families who would silently suffer the pangs of hunger • rather than seek Union relief.- • -

YEARS of hard work were marked at Gisburn when the foundation stones were laid for the new Parish Hall, which was to cost £5,316. The stones had been bought by local residents and organisa tions and donations, in the form of the foundation stones, were to bear the names of the donors. Six corner stones were sold for £50 each and .24 centre stones for £10 each. • Prizes at the annual speech day of
Clitheroe Royal Grammar School were presented by Professor F. E. Vick, of University College, North Staffordshire, a t the King Lane Hall. -Afterwards, he addressed the gathering of boys, parents and guests, who included the Mayor and Mayoress of the town. Head boy, M. J. Niland, proposed a vote of thanV.';!.
