Who shot protected peregrine falcon?

by Faiza Afzaal ^

.THIS is the x-ray image of a protected bird of prey found badly wounded after being shot at several

times. The peregrine falcon, a breed of bird tha t carries the •

highest level of UK protection, was found injured by a member of the public in Grindleton Quarry, Pinewoods, • near Waddington. - , ■The bird was unable to fly and taken to a vet. I t was

later x-rayed and found to be suffering from injuries con sistent with being shot with a shot gun. / . Lancashire Police Wildlife Officers are currently inves

tigating the incident, which occurred towards the end of . last week. The bird, although relatively fit and well, is being cared for at an undisclosed location.-However, the ■ landowner for Grindleton Quarry has offered a substantial reward for information leading to the conviction of any- person connected with this i n c i d e n t . ^ . . The peregrine is afforded special protection under

Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and is on the Red List of Birds and Conservation Concern. Mr Paul Shoreman, Lancashire County Council’s countryside ranger, said: “I’m quite shocked as incidents like these are very few and far between in the Ribble Valley. ■ ■ “The Peregrine Falcon is afforded a high degree of pro

tection and Ribble Valley is known to be a good habitat ■ forthem.’’. Anyone with any information should contact Lancashire

Police on 08451253545 or Crimestoppers anonyunously on 0800555 111.

Uncertain future for popular pitch and putt

by Julie.Magee:

A;QUESTI0N mark is hanging over the future of Edisford’s pitch and putt course following a decision to demolish the recreation

area’s Riverside Cafe. Historically, th e local

amenity, which has been enjoyed by local residents and tourists alike for more than 20 years, has always been oper ated through the cafe. However, with th e cafe’s

imminent closure, who will deal ■with the operation of the course has been thrown into question, forcing councillors to consider its future and seek alternative uses for the land. “We want to find out if

people have ideas on whether or not this can be saved or, alternatively, if there are no solutions, what we can do with this land in the future.” • explained Clitheroe Town Councillor and Ribble Valley Borough Councillor Alan Tearing. . Ribble Valley Borough Council hope plans to replace

the cafe with pitches that can be leased out to mobile food v an operators will be more financially viable and attract more tourists to Edisford. Street Scene Manager Gra

ham Jagger said he hoped th a t a similar financially, sound solution could also he

found for the pitch and putt course site. “The council must take a

pragmatic view as regards to the future of the pitch and p u t t course,” he explained. “Whilst i t provides enjoy ment to a relatively small number of visitors, the

income generated nowhere near covers th e cost of its maintenance.” Our picture shows Coun.

Ruth Hargreaves and Coun. Alan Tearing outside Edis ford’s Riverside Cafe with the pitch and putt course in the background. B201008/1

Pioneering health scheme to expand

A PERSONAL weight man agement service piloted and perfected in Ribble Valley and Hyndbum will now be extend ed to Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale to help support ad u l ts tackle their weight issues. • ■ From this month,, the

expanded scheme ■will build on the service initiated 18 months ago in Ribble Valley and Hynd bum by NHS East Lancashire, the a re a ’s local community health care provider. Now, following the perfected

and successful scheme set up here, the Primary Care Trust is working in partnership with Burnley Borough Council, Pen dle Leisure Trus t and Rossendale Leisure Trust to offer a number of alternative adult weight management serv ices to suit each indmdual. The aim is to tailor a pro gramme to the individual, so

•that they can effectively lose weight in a suitable, controlled and.safe manner, as well as impro'ving their lifestyle for the future. Those with a weight issue can access a group pro gramme, supported by the local leisure trust, in the knowledge that other group members -will support and help each other.

Alternatively, there is a range of dietician service which allows for a more individualised

V approach, tailored to the client’s own circumstances. Katie Simson, who is a Spe

cialist Community Dietitian with NHS East Lancashire, said: “We have updated the range of services we offer to support people to lose and manage their weight. We will be providing practical help, ses sions and advice on aspects such as nutrition, cooking, exer cise and physical acti-vity, and offering a way forward with realistic lifestyle changes. “T h a t is the key.-Small

changes can be achieved and built on by a person who wants to make a difference in their lifestyle.” Helen Jamieson, NHS East

Lancashire’s Health Develop ment Manager, added: “There are many risks associated ■with being overweight or obese, including cardiovascular dis-

. ease and some cancers. I t is important the we are imple-- menting local services to help local people. ” Anyone wanting to access

the service can do so either by seeing their GP or their surgery’s practice nurse.
