Rotary awards for pair
TWO dentists were all smiles when they were presented with awards by the Rotary Club of Clitheroe. Well-known retired dentist"
and long-standing Rotarian Kenneth Bowker was present ed with an engraved crystal bowl to mark his 90th birth day.
■ . Meanwhile, the Clitheroe
club’s International Commit tee chairman - by coincidence also a dentist - was presented
with a well-deserved Interna tional Service Award. Both awards were made at
the club’s regular luncheon meeting, where a special guest was District Governor Tony P a r r in i, from th e R o tary Club of Carlisle South, who helped to make the presenta tions. Mr Bowker has been a
Rotarian for 55 years and cel-; ebrated his 90th birthday in ■July. He studied
dentistry.at
the Royal College of Sur geons, Edinburgh, and helped keep Clitheronians’ teeth in fine fettle for many years. In his spare time he was a
caravan enthusiast, exploring far and wide. Mr Bowker, who was presented with the engraved crystal bowl by Mr Tearing and Mr Parrini. Julie Taylor, one of a grow

Cancer Foundation, said: “We are delighted to have funded a number of projects to aid patient comfort or provide more welcome sur roundings for people during their treatment. In addition, Rosemere will also support local research projects and training.
■ “Funding for initiatives such as these
would not be possible wthout the continued generosity and support of people who donate to the,Rosemere Cancer Foundation or organise events on our behalf. •

River footpath closure concern
C O N C E R N h a s been mounting following the clo sure of p a r t of a po p u lar riverside footpath. A section of the footpath
alori^ide the river a t Brunger- ley Park has collapsed and in recent weeks fencing has been . erected in a bid to stop the public gaining access. The borough council’s street
scene manager Graham dagger this week explained that, hav ing earlier this year rejected a proposal to include a sum of money in the council's capital programme of works for the repair of the collapsed section of path, members of the Com munity Committee recom mended to Policy and Finance Committee th a t a sum of £3,000 be made available to carry out a desktop study and borehole survey of the area around the collapse. : Subject to the outcome of
the survey, there was a possi bility that more investigation and design work would be car ried out.
, ' • He said that members also
resolved th a t arboricultural contractors would be contact ed tor estimates of essential- urgent tree maintenance work, in the immediate area and that funding options be inves
•
tigated as regards the footpath repairs. At the meeting of Policy
and Finance Committee held on June 10th, members resolved th a t the £3,000 requested by Community Committee would be made available for the desktop study and borehole survey. Prior to the meeting of
Community Committee held on July 15th, members of the
-committee made a site visit to Brungerley Park to see the section of the collapsed path themselves and look around the park in general. The county council, who
were authors of the report considered by Community Committee on two occasions in the last nine months, has been contacted with a view to carrying out the suggested desktop study and borehole survey. Currently, the council had no timescale from the county council or date as to when the work could be car ried out. ■ “Meanwhile the collapsed'
and dangerous section of the riverside footpath is closed off and the public are strongly advised not to attempt to go around the fences and gain unauthorised access,” added Mr Jagger.
