THE RIBBLE Valley’s Sciencein- sport.com/Trek UK Cycles racing team came away with the Team Prize a t the National Cyclo Cross Championships a t Sutton Park in Birmingham. The local team were led home by

local favourite Ian Wilkinson from Burnley, who finished an excellent fourth place overall, seconds behind race winner Roger Hammond, who rides with seven-time Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong’s Discovery Channel racing team, and world class Olympic Mountain Bike rider Liam Kileen, who finished in second place. The five-strong team went into the.

Championships with high hopes of medals in the Senior and Under 23 categories, but \vith only two laps to go in the hour-long race, tragedy struck for the two local favourites Ian Bibby and Ian Field. , ’ P rior to these heartbreaking events. Field was leading the Under

23 category and was looking good for the overall senior title. Bibby was in second place in the Under 23 category and in sixth place

overall. With Wilkinson in fourth place

overall, they were comfortably win ning the Team Championship, but, unfortunately, a series of events com pletely changed the.outcome of the race.

. ' Firstly Field, who was in the lead

ing group of four and looking at ease with the relentless pace set by Ham mond, suffered a freak mechanical accident and his race was over in sec onds. And at the same time, Bibby, who

was within 20 seconds of the lead group, crashed heavily, injured his ribs and was out of the race. This meant th a t the two other

team members needed to finish in the top 10 to take the team prize from Scott UK, and Wilkinson need ed to maintain his fourth place, just

managed to hold on. to th a t all important fourth spot, and the other team members of Philip Spencer and Steven Roach finished eighth and 10th overall to take the Team Prize. Roach also won the Under 23

overall title. Wilkinson .will now start to pre

pare for his Road and MTB season, and will be seen racing locally in a' round of the National Criterium series to be held in Clitheroe town centre on August 2nd, as well as the Premier Calender road race - The Tour of Pendle and Ribble Valley to be held on April 30th. Bibby and Field have now moved

into a British Cycling Under 23 Academy house in the Peak District, and have a busy time ahead of them as they are groomed for the 2012 London Olympics.

GALLICA Swimming Squad continued in their quest to be the best at the

high potential swimmers from across Lancashire, had a 60-strong group tak ing on the nation’s best. The squad finished third

behind giants Stockport Metro and Nova Centuri on, a magnificent achieve ment for a club just enter

Andrews and Louis Nicholls were in action for the prospering club. Chelsea, 14, earned per

sonal best times in two of. her events - the 50m but-

Blackburn Centurions, also finished third 14-year-old in the 200m butterfly, an event in which she has already qualified for this summer’s , National Youth Champi onships, and eighth best 14- year-old in the 14/15 years 200m individual medley. Clitheroe Royal Gram

Whalleij Pumas Under I6s2 Ossy Villa ............... . . . . .2 WHALLEY Pumas held out for a draw against a strong Ossy Villa side but \vere con troversially denied all three points. The Pumas started well

and went ahead through man- of-the-match Simon Cowgill’s . free kick after just seven min utes. Villa fought back and had

two excellent dead ball chances to equalise but the Pumas defence held out. ' Midway through the half

Whalley made it 2-0 when excellent work by Declan Fitzhenry and Ellis Neary gave Ahmed Iqbal the chance to find the bottom corner of the Villa net. The Villa defence were

struggling to handle Iqbal’s pace, and the Whalley for ward was extremely unlucky not to make it 3-0 when he burst through on goal just before the interval. . After the break Villa really began to dominate arid pulled one back within 10 minutes.

remaining controversy reared its head when a Villa attack seemed to have been ended by Whalley keeper Sam Tow- nend.' However, when he clearly

had control of the ball with both hands, a Villa forward

were totally rejected but at least they managed to with stand late Villa pressure to- take a share of the spoils. Huncoal United Blue. ; . .0 LanghoJuniors UlOs . ...2 LANGHO moved seven points clear of the bottom of the league after a hard-fought battle at basement side Hun- coat. A scrappy first half saw'

Langho unable to reproduce the excellent football that enabled them to dominate, but not defeat, Clitheroe the previous week!

: This time they were, how: ever, rewarded for endeavour, and no-one epitomised this more than Sam Eddleston in defence who barely put a foot wrong. Langho, who hadn’t any

substitutes available, had to reorganise early on after cen tral midfield player Joel

Phelps was injured and had to' move to the front of the pack. The second half was end to

end with Huncoat unfortu nate not to take the lead when Langho keeper Peter Richard son produced a fingertip save onto the bar. The local youngsters

pushed on, and Sean Holmes refused to give up on a long ball, and was able to turn in a deflected tackle From this moment, Lang

ho pushed forward, confi dence boosted by the goal,

. and almost immediately it should have been two. . But Langho didn't have to wait long for more chance to appear as Holmes finished splendidly with a right foot shot high to the keeper's right to grab his second. And three hard fought, but

very welcome, points were Langho's to take homa Readslone Under 13s . . .A Akzo Green ........................2 READSTONE Under 13s beat Akzo Green 4-2 despite trmling 2-0 at halfrtima ' This impressive comeback
