Gran dies after FamilVnoticCS shopping fall

www.cIitheroetodav.co.uk Funeral Directors by Faiza Afzaal

AN inquest has opened into the death of a Clitheroe grandmoth er who died following an acci dent in her local supermarket. Mrs Vera Longfield (86), of

Brook Street, fell after colliding with a stock cage at Tesco’s Clitheroe branch. The incident happened just before

2 p.m. on January 4th and it is believed that the pensioner suffered a broken hip following the fall. : Mrs Longfield was taken to

Blackburn Royal Infirmary, but died two days'later following com plications. A spokesman for the East Lan

cashire’s coroner’s office, which opened the inquest into her death

on Monday, said: “Mrs Longfield was admitted to hospital on Janu ary 5th, after being struck by a stock cage at Tesco store. “She was found to have suffered a

fractured'hip and underwent sur gery on January 6th. , A post-mortem examination was carried out and the cause of death has been revealed as broncho-pneu monia due to chronic bronchitis and emphysema and contributed to her death, but not causing was the frac tured neck of the femur operated.” Earlier this week, staff at the

supermarket spoke of their shock and sadness at the death of a popu lar customer. A spokesman for Tesco said: “We were extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Mrs Longfield. She was a regular and well-known customer and

extremely well-liked by our staff. “The incident itself: was an

incredibly unusual set of circum stances. Mrs Longfield was standing by a cage in an aisle and a trolley unfortunately was pushed into the cage, colliding \vith her. “The consequences of the inci

dent were tragic. Although the cir cumstances were so unusual, we are of course reviewing exactly what- happened. “Our thoughts and sympathies

are with her family.” Mrs Longfield’s funeral was held

on Monday at Accrington Cremato rium. The inquest into her death was

opened at Blackburn Coroner’s Office and has been adjourned until April 18th.

More good news for Valley schools

BOTH Ribble Valley schools pro viding education past the age of 16 have again performed well above ^ the national average. Clitheroe Royal Grammar School

and Stonyhurst College are the bor ough’s two ehtries in the Govern ment’s latest “league tables” for schools and colleges providing post- 16 education. ■ At the grammar school’s Sixth Form Centre, in York Street, 305 pupils sat examinations, mainly A levels and AS levels. The average point score per pupil

was 396.9, compared to the Eng land average of 277.6 and the

regional average of 292.2. The grammar school’s point score was the third best in the county behind Lancaster Girls Grammar School (451.4) and Lancaster Royal Gram-. mar School (415.9). At Stonyhurst College, near

Hurst Green, 85 pupils sat relevant examinations, achieving an average point score per pupil of 319.3, again well ahead of both England and regional averages. Other post-16 schools and col

leges attended by students from the Ribble Valley are listed, together with their average point scores per pupil:

School, Blackburn-371.6 ® St Mary’s College, Blackburn-
