THE hunt is on in the Ribble Valley for a child to become the “face” of a local bottled water company’s new product. Grindleton woman Jules Birch, who owns
Works with Water, is calling on readers of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times to nominate their very own “little squirts” to become the face of Little Squirts bottled water. In return they will appear on the bottle pack
aging and see their face on the shelf in hundreds of supermarkets across the country. The product is a 100% naturally flavoured,
prebiotic spring water with no preservatives or sugars. The next two versions of Little Squirts are due to be launched and the makers are look ing for a child to also help choose one of the new flavours. Mrs Birch, the proud “mum” of the Little
Squirts’ spring water, having set up the compa ny from her home in Grindleton in April this year, said: “We produce a bottled spring water

A DANCE, which took place on Saturday, to raise funds for terminally ill cancer suf ferer Pauline Altham raised £600. Organised by the Knights of St Colum-
ba, the dance was held at St Michael and St John’s RC Social Centre, Lowergate, Clitheroe, with dancing to Bob Fairclough and a raffle. Mrs Altham (62), of Goosebutts Lane,
Clitheroe, is paying for her treatment, a series of six doses of Cetuximab in conjunc tion with chemotherapy, with the help of generous friends, relatives, work colleagues and local residents. They have now raised more than £10,400 for Pauline’s Challenge. Mrs Altham has been forced to fund her
treatment after the NHS refused to pay for Cetuximab on the grounds that the Nation al Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has not yet completed its appraisal of the drug. This means Mrs Altham has to find the £10,000 it costs for each series of six doses of the drug herself, which amounts to a bill of more than £40,000 a year to sustain her health. Mrs Altham, who works at Clitheroe
Health Centre’s dispensary, is currently on her second set of treatment. Future fund-raising events include a sponsored five-and-a-half-mile walk around the Tolkien Trail at Hurst Green organised by staff at the dispensary. It will take place on Sunday, November 19th, meeting at the village hall car park at 10 a.m. The walk is suitable for all the family with a sponsor sheet for a family of four costing £5 and available from the dispensary. A jumble sale on Saturday, November
18th, at St Michael and St Jolm’s Catholic Hall, Lowergate, Clitheroe, organised by Pendleside Medical Practice will take place between 10 a.m. and noon and entrance will cost 50p. Refreshments will be avail able.

Valley’s MP backs plans for centre
by Faiza Afzaal
PROPOSALS to create a multi-faith facility as well as a venue for Muslim prayers have won the backing of Ribble Val ley MP Nigel Evans. Earlier this week, Mr Evans
spoke in favour of an application for a “place of worship and com munity partnership centre” at the former Mount Zion Chapel, in Lowergate, Clitheroe. He said he was “delighted” with
the amount of understanding and support from other faiths within the Ribble Valley with regards to the plans. He added: “I am delighted that
the Muslim community in Clitheroe has been able to find a building which is a former church and will therefore lend itself per- _ fectly as a building to be used for faith issues. “I believe it is not only going to
provide a more appropriate prayer facility for local Muslims than the Ribble Valley Borough Council Chamber, but will also be used by other faiths and will be put to community use. “I think that is superb. The tol
erance which the inter-faith groups are displaying in the Rib ble Valley should be replicated in

other countries, including Pak istan and Egypt where Christians do not get shown tolerance of their religion, and this must change.” As reported in last week’s
Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, an application to create a multi faith facility, which will be open to local organisations and benefit all denominations, at the former Lap pet Manufacturing building in Mount Vale, (also previously occupied by Granby Garments) has been submitted to Ribble Val ley Borough Council by members of the town’s Medina Islamic Education Centre (MIEC). Mr Sheraz Arshad, spokesman
for the MIEC, is pleased that the former chapel could be returning to its originaTpurpose for commu nity prayer and reflection and hopes the go-ahead will provide a much-needed prayer venue for local Muslims, who have lived in the town for more than 40 years. He believes the multi-cultural
approach will also play a big part in building positive relationships between local faith groups. However, the move has prompt
ed a mixed reaction from local groups and residents. Earlier this week, the Rev. Chris
Cheeseman, of Whalley Methodist Church, spoke in favour of the application. He said:
• TWISTON driver Karen Ann Preece (44), of Brownlow Farm, was remanded on bail when she appeared before
“I support the application because it’s a basic human right that the people have the opportunity to worship in the way they wish to. “I have always supported previ
ous bids made by Clitheroe’s Islamic community and feel they should have their spiritual home instead of borrowing the Ribble Valley Borough Council chamber. “I also like the multi-faith
approach, which I believe will help us to learn from each other and understand each other, which can only be good for community development.” Similar views were expressed by
community stalwart Sir Bill Tay lor, who said: "I have studied this proposal and think it would make a very successful use of this cur rently disused, but glorious build ing. -It satisfies twin needs of a small faith group in Clitheroe and also the tasteful regeneration of a building restoring it to its original intended use as a place of wor ship.” However, some concerned resi
dents fear that the building will attract Muslims from the wider area, while others believe that there is not a large enough Muslim community within Clitheroe to justify the proposal. • See letters page and “As I See I t” for reaction.
